Pine Crest, Glenbrook North in California Round Robin Exhibition Round

Califorinia Round Robin exhibition round debaters and their critics
OAKLAND, CA - On February 15 and 16, the College Preparatory School hosted twelve of the nation’s top debate teams for the California Round Robin. The round robin is a fun and unique event. Teams spent Thursday debating in conference rooms generously provided by the Oakland office of Reed Smith, one of the fifteen largest law firms in the world. Thursday night ended with dinner and ice cream at Fenton’s creamery, an historic ice cream parlor in Oakland. Friday morning started with a tour of AT&T Park in San Francisco, and ended with a catered awards banquet and exhibition debate critiqued by a panel of experts on this year’s policy debate topic. (More information follows in the full article.)
The exhibition round featured Seth Bour and David Maniero of Pine Crest School and Matt Fisher and Stephanie Spies of Glenbrook North High School. (Matt was also top speaker.)
Seth and David are coached by Ernie Querido. Matt and Stephanie are coached by Christina Tallungan.
The expert critics were:
Michael Camunez. Mr. Camunez served in the Clinton Administration from 1993-1995 as the Senior Policy Advisor at the Corporation for National Service, an executive agency in Washington D.C. established by President Clinton to implement the AmeriCorps program. Mr. Camunez was a founding architect of the program and its legislation and was appointed to serve a principal advisor to the Corporation CEO Eli Segal, Assistant to the President at the White House. From 1991-1993, Mr. Camunez was the Director of the National Service Demonstration Program at the bi-partisan U.S. Commission on National and Community Service. In 2002, he was appointed as a Commissioner by Governor Davis to the Governor’s Office on Service & Volunteerism. He was re-appointed in 2005 by Governor Schwarzenegger and, since 2006, he has co-chaired the state commission, now known as “California Volunteers.”
Andrew Furco. Mr. Furco is Director of UC Berkeley’s International Center for Research on Civic Engagement and Service-Learning at the University of California, Berkeley, where he serves as a professor in the Graduate School of Education. He recently received the 2006 Researcher of the Year Award from the National Society for Experiential Education.
Peter Hanson. From 1996 to 2002, Mr. Hanson served as a legislative aide specializing in environmental policy issues in the U.S. Senate for Democratic Leader Tom Daschle. He has also taught History, Philosophy, and Government. He is currently a Graduate Fellow in Ethics at Cal.

We never declare a winner of the final round. It’s an exhibition debate. The panelists critique the arguments but do not choose a winner. That said, the other round robin participants voted to affirm (for Pine Crest) by a narrow margin.
A HUGE thank you to Victor for helping us get in touch w/ Michael Camunez, who was an OUTSTANDING panelist.
I hope everyone had a great time.
