Coast2Coast: Mike Spirtos Wins Berkeley; Allison Huberlie Wins Harvard

Harvard finalists Jake Nebel and Allison Huberlie
CAMBRIDGE, MA - Congratulations to the finalists at the Harvard National Invitational! Liz Rogers, a two-time past champion herself, introduced the competitors before the start of the round: Allison Huberlie of Hollis-Brookline High School and Jake Nebel of Trinity Preparatory School. They had emerged from a field of well over three hundred competitors. On a 5-4 decision, Allison defeated Jake to claim the perpetual trophy which will now bear her name.
Allison is coached by Adwait Parker. Jake is coached by Petey Gil-Montllor.
Congratulations are also in order to the two finalists in the tournament’s highly competitive junior varsity division. (The division featured nearly three hundred participants.) The round featured Ridge High School’s Shireen Rudina and Regis High School’s Coulter King. Shireen was triumphant after a 5-2 decision was delivered in her favor.
Shireen is coached by Dave Yastremski and Dario Camara. Coulter is coached by Eric Di Michele.

Berkeley finalists Mike Spirtos and Jon Kwan
BERKELEY, CA - The California Invitational — hosted at UC Berkeley — has come to a close. Congratulations to Mike Spiritos of the Meadows School, who defeated Jon Kwan of Lynbrook High School on a 3-2 decision in the final round of varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate. The round was adjudicated by Alex Smith, Ankur Mandhania, Mike Dorsi, Ryan Lawrence, and Thomas Brugato. (The latter two dissented.) Congratulations as well to Lynbrook’s triumphant Junior Varsity team who closed out the division!
Mike is coached by Dan Meyers. Jon is coached by Dave McGinnis and Corbin Cass.

the dancing had nothing to do with theory, it’s just that jkwan got bored. well, he didn’t really dance, he just randomly wandered around the room, moved his legs in a kinda ‘dancely ‘ fashion, drank soda during spiritos’s speech instead of flowing, etc.

My REAL coach, Ken “Socrates” Hershey (and, even more transitively, Marcus-not sure what the name on the back of your sweatshirt is-Moretti).
Chetan Hertzig/Shadman Zaman/Nikita Lalwani for letting me uphold the Kong dynasty. I will be sure to join you all for another nauseauting “delightful” lunch. Perhaps we can have cookies afterward?
And, of course, the biggest Scarsdale/HB fan in Europe, MAks.

Harvard panels stuff:
Triples:
Coppell RT vs Myers Park RS — That was Tanya on the panel, not me.
Coon Rapids AB vs. Walt Whitman EN — That was a 2-1 with Berryhill sitting out.
Newtown GNT vs. Walt Whitman XZ — That was a 2-1 with Pandita sitting out.
Octos
Scarsdale KT vs. Spanish River HN — That was a 3-0 and the panel was Eric Melin, a gentleman I don’t know (I think his name was Emmett), and me.
Quarters:
Lexington MC vs. Millburn GH — That was a 3-0 and the panel was Ryan Hamilton, Doug Lieb and me.
I believe the Ali vs. Micki semis round was a 5-0 for Ali, but I could be wrong about that.
And finals was a 5-4 decision.

Congrats to everyone who bid at Harvard and Berkeley, especially those who finished their qual to TOC.
To my twin:
I can imagine that this weekend was disappointing, after all the hoping and working, what else could it be? Almost every debater wants, no, is obsessed with, qualling to TOC, and if not TOC, some other national tournament. I used to think that qualling to TOC was everything. I remember my first bid (I remember yours too!) and how anxious I was to hear the decision. After camp this summer, I was hoping to get past just “qualling” to TOC, and hopefully establishing my position in the upper echelons of debaters. (I think we both were) Maybe that happened, probably didn’t, it’s something I’m not going to concern myself with in this post.
What I am going to say is that I’m sorry that there is this idea that people who go to TOC are better than other debaters. Some of us try to avoid that mentality, and that’s great, but I think our perceptions of a person’s debate ability are still tainted by that fact. Debate is a competitive activity, and winning competitions should be applauded. With qualifiers to TOC finished, and this season coming into it’s last stretch, qualifiers to Nfls and Cfls going on, states for some places, I think it’s worthwhile to remind ourselves of other values of debate.
I think it’s great that debaters make, and keep friends from far away, going so far as to include them in their lives on a daily basis. For me, I think that’s been better than the competition. Thinking about what I’ll do next year, I can’t see many ties back to debate. I’m not working at a camp and I’m not coaching as of now; I haven’t talked to a lot of my debate friends in months. What I can see, is maintaining the relationships I’ve established over the years.
When I met you at NDF after my sophomore year, I didn’t really think twice about it. You were a lab mate. (An especially neurotic one.) I think we really connected during the camp tournament. I remember I was about to hit Ankur, and I was terrified because he was in “top lab”. (Sounds silly, now that I think about it.) And instead of intimidating me more, Ankur came over and tried to convince me I was going to beat him! His right hand man (or, woman, rather), you were right next to him trying to tell me the same thing. We didn’t really talk that much during the summer, and I’m not sure when we started talking again (Emory?), but since then, we’ve been inseparable.

I’m not quite sure why it cut off the last bit of my post, but I’m glad I saved it somewhere else.
Continued’
NSD this year was great, I loved being there with you, and I loved having you to support me. I wish I could have traveled more this year; I’ve missed that feeling at tournaments here. I was really looking forward to seeing you at TOC. But you can be assured I’ll be calling you 24/7 from it anyways.
You might not have bid this year, and you might not be going to TOC, but everyone who knows you knows that you are an incredibly talented debater. And, probably more rare, you’re an incredible person.
