Patrick — didn’t seem as if they were, but according to tournament reps they were intended to be as much as possible (teams had to enter records in order for power-protecting to work.)

For those of you following the specifics, a community judge-rating system is in place and each team/competitor got 7 strikes to use.

Round 6 of prelims isn’t scheduled until early Sunday morning, so breaks will not be announced until after that. The field, according to Joy of Tournaments, includes 232 VLD and 95 JV LD entrants.

Linda– that’d be nice. Tab’s closed however and quite a few of the judges even in varsity are refusing to disclose, so there’s no way to know results unless the debaters post them here themselves.

yeah i think pdiehl is right that presets weren’t power paired because i hit pam brown round 2. i don’t know that many records, but…

    mostafa is 4-1
    I am 5-0
i heard diehl was down 1
perelman was 4-0 going into the last round
there is a three hour difference so i’m pretty tired, and don’t remember anything else, other than the fact that i want in and out

    232 debaters = ~70 4-2, 5-1, 6-0 according to Spirtos. Partial trips don’t solve this problem.

    Records:
    Pine Crest PB 3-2
    Pine Crest AB 3-2
    Menlo-Atherton BR 5-0 or 4-1
Los Altos DM 5-0 or 4-1
    Hockaday JG 5-0 or 4-1
    Edina TB 4-1
    Meadows MS 5-0

spirtos is wrong, its way more than that. around 80. last year there were 77 4-2+ with only 215 kids, and w/ power protection in presets we might reasonably expect stanford to exceed the ideal statistical distribution in the top brackets.

Can we get a break down of the ballot counts in those octs rounds? I love that of the 4 texas debaters in that round, 3 of them hit cali debaters and 5 of those 9 judges were cali judges while 1 of the 9 was from TX. That is rough.

Yah Mangus, I realize that obviously. But that’s also because there are a lot of Texas kids in those outrounds. Of the 16 debaters in Octs, I believe only 4 were from Cali. Just seems to me like there were enough judges to have a bit more geographic diversity on those panels, and the same would be nice at St Marks and Greenhill when it’s at all possible.

I happened to see the top 10 speakers while I was turning ballots in at the tab room a few hours ago, but don’t remember anyone’s placement on it — sorry. At that time, tab told me that the composites wouldn’t be in the ballot packets that were given out at awards at 8:30 pm but would be available on line later this week.

If anyone cares, for completeness or other reasons, here’s the judge information for the outrounds I judged.

Trips – Bellevue MH def. Edina JM
2-1: Tatiana Cottam and I negated for Bellevue, and a guy whom I don’t know the name of squirreled.

Dubs – St. Louis Park NT def. Bellevue MH
3-0 for St. Louis Park on aff: Stephen Hess, me, and a tourney-hired Stanford student whose name I don’t know.

Congratulations Jon and Nick! It has been awesome seeing both of you grow as debaters over the past few years. This weekend served only to reconfirm the strength *and* depth of the Lynbrook and St. Louis Park debaters and the programs themselves. (So, shout out to Dave, Corbin, Christian, and Heather as well.)

Congratulations as well to Greg — I believe that his loss in semis was his first outrounds defeat (not counting a coach over) this season. There was not a huge amount of Northeasterners out in California this weekend, so you made us proud by representing us so well. And congratulations to Dan — one of the nicest people I have ever met in this activity — for this HUGE octas bid breakout. Very well deserved!

    babb:

st marks octos onward: 0 cali judges on any panel.

st marks octos: 12 texans/24 total judges

st marks quarters: vbd only lists 2 panels, but its 6/6 all texan.

    semis: 6/6

    finals: 3/3

SOME of the available cali judges that were more qualified than some judges in octos but did not receive ballots: dan meyers, eric palmer, larry mcgrath, thomas brugato, stephen hess, corbin cass, dave mcginnis…this is just off of the top of my head, i dont even have a judge list with me. i know first year outs werent allowed to judge outrounds at marks but that rule is bogus too and stanford didn’t adhere to it.

stanford gives cali heads ballots because it can and it should – the number of good californian judges that show up at texas tournaments and just kick it during outrounds because less qualified texans who count up arrows at the end of the debate fill up panels blows my mind.

at least at california tournaments when there is cali bias on panels all the judges are as qualified if not more qualified than non-cali alternatives. cali judges that babb is complaining were judging texans in octos: Rai, Brugato, Lawrence, Case, Sheehan, Trombley-Shapiro, Leiter, Peiris. Anybody out there, what texans didn’t get octos ballots with which you wouldve replaced these judges? Just a sample of some of the texans on octos panels at st marks that anyone on the list at the top of my post could replace and as a result improve the quality of the panel: Katie Dessi, Jo Russell, Eric Melin, Jenn Miller, Chad Henson.

    Gimme a break babb.

The octas panel Daryl was to be on turned into Evnen, Kyle Kimball, and myself. I also judged Moerner over Tulsi Patel in triples (a 3-0: Sheehan, Mandhania, Hatch), as well as Perelman over Hopkins VH in doubles (a 3-0: Mandhania, Sheehan, Stanford parli debater named Mike ______).

And I don’t know much about the whole judge region thing, except to say that there were hella ballots getting pushed (see the doubles and octas rounds I judged, particularly that octas round with 2/3 pushed ballots), and mostly Cali people around to take them – perhaps that helps to explain any lack of diversity, perceived or otherwise? To answer a previous question, I don’t know who was tabbing (I was told and forgot, sorry), but I know Mike Baer was doing a lot in terms of getting ballots pushed and making sure things ran well, along with a lady I didn’t recognize. They both did a fantastic job making that stuff go well in outrounds…hard as it is for a cal kid to say this, you guys deserve props for this one. :)

Good job to all who did well – Eric for ending that epic struggle, Greg Hertz for being amazing, JKwan for winning despite not being in the RR, Moerner for qualling, etc…and thanks a lot to the Monte Vista kids for making my job easy.

jr thorsen hates me for delaying the start of his round till 830 resulting in a round ending at 10pm due to a long RFD/ my opponent arguing with casey trombley shapiro for 70 minutes

now he probably hates me for letting grassmeyer get through trips and therefore indirectly knocking him out of doubles.

ps i now officially HATE triples. the first time i`m down one at a really legit tournament i wind up losing in trips. i should be shot.
