Also, Ben should have come out with a big ” Why do we have to compare Utilities of actions”?! I’m not utilitarian! In fact, MacIntire, whom Govind uses, tells us that there is a universal morality, just that it isn’t Utilitarianism.

Don’t worry I don’t take it as picking a fight. What do you think Ben won it on?

In a way this round was set-up perfectly for Govind because his case backs Ben into a corner. Ben says that morality can’t be arbitrary, or flexable, and Govind basicaly says “Look, that’s completely true! When we affirm there is no way to choose between two Utilities exceot for a way that is arbitrary and relative. So by Ben’s own logic we negate.” And I liked that.

Now, Ben almost had a good enough response, that 1) It doesn’t really matter because the effects are the same and 2) Just because you can’t compare apples to organges diesn’t show me that there is any difference between corporate and individual action.

Also, I never said that convidence was a good thing to vote on or that Govind was confident enough. But I think that confidence, or appearing like your winning even if you’re unsure is one of the main reasons that I dropped to Ben and more of a reason that I dropped to you in our round a while back.

Tom,
I really dont think that was an accurate statement at all. I watched the final round, and while I hesitate to pick a fight, I dont think the round was at all close enough to be decided by confidence level, and if it was, confidence is still a horrible tie breaker. I think i would vote on confidence or education before i would vote on confidence. And on that note, I think govind seemed confident enough to me…

Hey Govind, great Job infinal round. It sucks that one of you had to lose. I think that you could have won that round if you had come off as if you were winning more thatn Ben.

A correction: West Lafayette LD is coached, in part, by Todd ‘babyface’ Shuba.

Congratulations to Dillon on finally getting his bid. My round with him in semis was far and away the most difficult (and best) round I’ve ever had. He certainly deserves the bid.

Thanks to all who make debate possible in Indiana; as much as we moan about Indiana LD, it’s a lot better than nothing.

I agree. I always like having Todd as a judge. At least when you see “Shuba” on the pairings you don’t go “I don’t think he’s ever judges LD”.

Let’s also give a much deserved congratulations to my fellow West Lafayette H.S. judge Todd Shuba. Todd also coaches Govind at West Lafayette H.S. I think Tom would agree that Todd has done an excellent job the last two seasons as one of the youngest coaches and judges in Indiana.

1) Congrats to Ben and everyone, this is a nicce way to close out your senior year.

2) Congrats to West Laffyette. You guys really earned it.

3) Personally, I was suprised by the final round LD decision, but congrats to Ben. Honostly I think that the judges got lost along the way and that Ben presented himself better and as if he was winning, and therefore he did. Congrats to JD on a good season as well.

4) I love to see this Indiana converage! Nice to know that we aren’t entirely forgotten!

5) I have the next year to get my name up from Quarters to Champion!

6) Congrats to everyone else who broke in LD, it was a harsh cut. I think that Arlan was one of the only 4-2 s to break. (Ballots that is not rounds)
