My observation is that the competitors have little time to look at the comments here, so why not save space for results instead of remarks like “Good luck to XYZ!!” Thank you.

Competitors would tend to know the results if they are at the tournament and I really can’t fault people for giving congratulations to their friends.
Also, aren’t the comments below the results, wouldn’t you have to actively scroll down to read the comments… if your that rushed and need results BAD than you don’t have to scroll.
Good Luck Kelsey, Wesley stay away from all floor to ceiling windows.

Reply to Earl:
Often coaches and competitors at an event get rounds results posted in the comments as they are happening before the “official” story at the top of the comments is written and inserted. So scrolling is, unfortunately, still necessary.

He didn’t like the style of debate that LD was heading towards (speedy, technical, theory), so he dropped. It actually is a shame, because I would’ve liked to see how he would’ve done. Ironically, his last round (which was at NDF) basically involved him making a 2 minute long theory argument in his first rebuttal on a Zizek card that his opponent misinterpreted and Craig (apparently) knew a lot more about. Oh well.

i just want to congratulate a few people for breaking and doing well etc etc…
first, major congrats to justin bexley for keeping the breaking streak alive. I think that’s 6 for 6 at TOC tournaments. It’s been a pleasure being your former teammate and current coach. Keep up the work !
secondly, congrats to johanna tyler from crowley. I’ve judged you a time or two and am very impressed with your debating and hope that you get that elusive toc qual.
third, conrats to the ndf people for a strong showing. alok, alison, sporkin and the scarsdale guys as well.
fourth, i’m glad to see the jeffers name return to the break round postings. huge congrats to greg!
and finally, WOW to catherine tarsney. I knew her brother well and If you’re half as good as he was right now then watch out jason baldwin… Freshmen with bids is rare and getting them at a highly competitive tournament like emory is even more astounding! congrats to all

Congrats to Catherine on completing the qual and very possibly being the first freshman to make such a deep run at an octos bid! Also congrats to Julian on another great performance, even though dropping another bid round sucks (drawing McGough as a high seed kinda sucks too, huh?). Aren’t you, like, 14-1 negating on this topic so far? Keep the pace and the bids will start coming.
Also congrats of course to the semifinalists, especially Wade for a big and well-deserved breakout and to Lynbrook for continuing to dominate all and sundry.
Finally, a big thanks to Dave for being one of the absolute nicest people in the debate community and going massively out of his way to help us out and make it logistically possible for our kids to compete despite me not being at the tournament. Also thanks to Ernie for helping with judges and whatnot.

I talked to wade one time. I claim all credit for how well he did. Futher, I talked to his coach one time, David Weeks, and also claim all credit for what he did. Further, I claim no credit for what I did or what Jkwan did.
Further, the debaters are good and emory is in atlanta.

Catherine Tarsney is a-goshdarn-MAZING. I predicted long ago that she would win the TOC twice. I now repeat that prediction for posterity. (Someone save this.)
This was a fun weekend. It wasn’t worth missing my son’s 6th birthday, but it came as close to being worth it as anything could have. Happy Birthday, Conal!
I look forward to seeing everyone at Stanford and Berkeley, and if not, I’ll see you in Kentucky.

David Weeks for being a baller coach.
JKwan, Real Diehl, Dave, and Corbin on yet another big showing.
Catherine for being an absolute monster and Christian for having the foresight to introduce free agent and drafting out of middle school to debate.

Impartial Bystander:
Non-seniors success at Emory is nothing new. Aside from last year, 2005 had a junior in finals (Katie Poulos), 2004 (David Wolfish, a junior, won the tournament), and 2003 had Steph Bell winning the tournament as a junior. My memory for debate doesn’t go back much further, but I’m sure the Alex Smith, Mike Bietz, and Cherian Koshy types can provide a bit more insight into the large amount of success that underclassmen are having.

I want to verify that Dave is not lying and that he actually did make that prediction – I distinctly remember it. It was during the weekend of Novice Nats ’05 and occured on Saturday, April 9th, 2005. Did I think his prediction was unfounded at the time? Not at all.

tristan–
while i’m flattered to be mentioned alongside cherian and bietz (especially since my debate trivia skills are falling off), and while you are right that younger debaters tend to do very well at emory, i think “impartial bystander” was referring to a broader trend of younger debaters doing well this year (see, for instance, shadman zaman winning the glenbrooks, etc.) i personally think that 2003 and 2005 had stronger junior classes than 2007 does, but having juniors win glenbrooks and emory is pretty remarkable and i’m curious to see how the TOC ends up.

josh fulweiler lost the finals as a sophomore and never returned to the finals of the barkley forum.
shadman won glenbrooks as a junior on the aff, which has never been done. hetal won as a junior on the neg during the trend of negs winning the glenbrook final round for nearly a decade. i don’t recall who broke this streak. certainly not the same as the barkley forum streak of aff’s winning in policy but it was long.

i hate to contradict cherian and i make no claim to actually remember this (i only remember watching merve v steph, eric v david, and katie v tara) but hsdebate.com archives say josh lost to andy oconnell in semis his soph year. finals was andy vs steve pattyn.

ps: emory was always a really memorable tournament for me. jful was my idol when i was a young debater. he gave me the worst beating of my life when i found myself in the 4-1 bracket at newman my freshman year. i remember being disappointed when he lost to michael collins at emory my freshman year, especially after his masterful execution of the “because i lost the flip, i affirm joke” (this was in the days where opening quotes werent TOTALLY passe yet). i also remember watching kendra debate steph in semis, partially bc i envied kendra for her endless string of wins against my mentor booth wilson and partially bc it was the first time i ever talked to john mckay. that weekend was also the first time i met paul schiano, who had been banished to student congress. jesus christ these memories are insane, i need to move on.

Jonny,
I can vouch for Mr. Weeks being too lazy to make Wade into a canned-argument-spewing-bot-debater.

Yeah, David makes Wade do things instead of programming him.
Thanks, Jonny, for demeaning a great coach and hard-working debater.

Kudos to Wade for winning the tournament. Although DWeeks is a tremendous coach, Wade won the octos round I judged him because he knew what to capitalize on during the last speech. That’s not something you can program. Don’t make mistakes when you are debating Wade Houston, he’ll make you pay for it. Way to represent the lab.

why is this the fifth entry down from the most recent post? it is two days after one of the biggest tournaments in the nation, and now it’s fifth? joan gass champing lexington was up for a good three days. consistency, anyone?

dear \”ok. what the fuck.\”
if you are calling VBI bias.. eh hem, Joan never attended VBI.
Second, do you know how the system works? The feature article is a specific category that, when you change it to a non-feature category, it just stays in the same order as all the others.
Third, if you\’re calling conspiracy, Wade also went to VBI.
I agree that it maybe fell too far, but that is just as simple as adjusting times a bit so public forum and such don\’t go above it.
Also, for it to be absurd you would have to be implying that it is without explanation… kinda like a superstitious, ideological hayseed, who without knowing the explanation, assumes it must be some conspiracy.
And why do people always have to turn congratulatory threads into hate?
Paranoid, much?

Questions for: ok. wtf.
1. Why do you care?
2. Why do you post under anonymous names(See your ‘uh what’ posts)?
3. Why don’t you start your own blog to post all of this stuff on?
4. Why don’t you rewrite the blogging software to make it automatically order in the ‘Other News’ section in order of desirability?
5. Why are you trying to start a pointless argument?
It appears to me that you are 1. uncomfortable with yourself, 2. involved in this post on VBD in some way (i.e. you are in the results and want to be recognized longer), and/or 3. ungrateful for the hard work that Jon does.

Ohh sorry, Bietz beat me to it. Take it away.

Okay, so, the article fell down because that’s how our timestamps work; the LD article was posted prior to the PF and policy results at the tournament. (And yes, that can be adjusted.) Once the “Featured” tag is removed from an article, it returns to its original timestamp.
I don’t know why I’d bury the article. Wade went to Session II as well as to NSD. I also like Wade and Jon a LOT and think they are both fantastic debaters.
And I just noticed Bietz posted, but I still feel like posting this.
Given that the article has over 200 posts, I definitely think the conversation is still pertinent, so I’ll make sure to bump it up.

In case the myriad of people saying it wont persuade you, i think the fact that I was on an airplane during semis and finals means Wade’s success is truly his own.
