YAY!!!!! I didn’t see Southern Lehigh compete, but I did see Regis compete in 2 outrounds after my partner and I were eliminated by Jen and David of Stoneman in double-octas. Regis relied on eloquence and rhetoric without having any hard evidence. Thank God Southern Lehigh won. Had Regis won, I would have literally no faith in public forum as academic debate with evidence and analysis. Still, a 3-2 decision is close…

Congrats to everyone who cleared, but my major critique of Barkley Forum was the reliance on hired, lay judges. I felt that in the outrounds I say oftentimes lay judges, whose first tournament was the Barkley Forum, would be the deciding factor. For examples, Jupiter KG killed Regis in the semis, but I think lay judges decided in favor of eloquence rather than substance.

Still a really fun tournament. I met awesome people (and debated some awesome people) and had a great time. Can’t wait until next year.

Graeme (I totally recognize your name from the PF group on facebook…), I completely disagree. I am of the opinion that eloquence and rhetoric is a good part of Public Forum.
What I hate is that a lot of people forget why PF was originally intended for: Lay Judges. I’ve seen complaints everywhere about “Oh, the judge didn’t flow our points, so we lost,” or “We had evidence, so we should have won.” It’s complaints like these that undermine the intent of the event.

All that aside, much congrats to Rachel and Donny for winning, Rob and Dennis for second, all four for what I’m sure was another intense Emory Final PF Round, Sarah and Kellie for semis, and my CDE homies Jen and David for clearing to wherever they cleared to. Much congrats to you as well, Graeme, for clearing.

Both Southern Lehigh and Regis were incredibly good. PFD id about style AND evidence. I felt both teams balanced these well.

Emory treats PFD like crap. There is no doubt about it. The judges were PFD judges (lay judging is ENCOURAGED in PFD), so I can’t complain about that. But you just get the feeling that nobody really cares how PFD goes.

Overall, however, I would say the competition was EXCELLENT this year!!
