Congratulations, Arielle!
I stopped by the tournament briefly and judged doubles. I want to give a quick shout out to Sam Grondahl and Noah Arbesfeld for an excellent round. It was one of the best I’ve judged in some time and I trust we’ll see many good things from both in the future.
Special shout out as well to Lee Shleifer-Katz, former SIG camper extraordinaire.

oliver–swt job, by the transitive property–you pretty much owned me haha
matt–nice job on octas AND the speaker award
aks–tough loss (lol)
also, i just heard from oliver that finals is Walt Whitman XZ vs. Niskayuna SG so congrats to them as well!

congrats to alex castro from ALJ who is currently in finals of JV with an 11-1 ballot count in outrounds this far. I’m very proud of you, your hard work is paying off!
also congrats to naveen on making it to the bid round. i am positive you will get your bid eventually man.
congrats also to julia, matt hershey, matt salant, akshay, gavin, micki, jessie, and sameer on clearing
I’d also like to say that Columbia had some of the best judging I had all year. In prelims, I had charlie furman, rahul d’sa, caitlin, petraro, and annie fuoto in back. Thanks to the Columbia staff for finding some of the best judges around in the NE. I mean… I had Anjan and Tanya Choudhury on a doubles panel. I can’t really ask for more than that (even though they split decisions in a very close round lol).

congrats first and foremost to oliver roth, whose constant humor, hard work and positive attitude are an inspiration to me and many of my teammates. i have no doubt that oliver’s dedication will continue to pay off through the end of this year and in the years to come.
congrats also to anjan. what a great accomplishment to top off a fantastic year 1!
congrats also to moretti. big win buddy. i still think it was illegit though.
finally, ken hershey, i really have nothing to say, except that i will NOT cooperate with…

I just wanted to say that Columbia was an extremely well run tournament and the efforts of the directors and all those involved were definately noticed and appreciated. The judging pool was very impressive and even without many of the big names the competition was still very impressive. Also, congratulations to gavin, monagle, akshay, naveen (you called me getting the middle guy), hershey, salant (correct last minute case decision in doubles), and yes Panda on great performances and making the waiting time enjoyable.

Walt Whitman XZ def. Sacred Heart AM (Augusta Moore)
I *believe* JV semis were:
Arthur L. Johnson AC def. Stuyvesant LS
Sacred Heart TG def. Walt Whitman BL
…and JV finals were:
Arthur L. Johnson AC (Alex Castro) def. Sacred Heart TG (T.J. Golden) (3-0; Scarola, Salant, Haney)

And to the Whitman kids…you guys are not only spectacular people but excellent debaters. Congratulations on doing so well and we’ll see you guys at WACFL!

Congratulations to Sam, of course, who was also very impressive in Semis and Quarters.
And, I just wanted to congratulate the Whitman debaters — the whole team — as you all are wonderful to coach, and really made us proud all weekend. Xiaoqi, I’m really glad you got your first bid and it is a real privilege to coach someone who cares so much about learning and debate for the right reasons.
Thank you to Joe and Lynne for running a great tab and for Matt Scarola for going above and beyond the call of duty to make us welcome and do everything he could think of to make a good tournament experience!
And most importantly, thanks to my sister Tanya for making all the coaching time fun and worthwhile!

Congrats the XQZ on the bid, but I would have preferred a poetic rendition of the AC in CX. Anyway, thanks to everybody who helped me out, especially Sohail for getting me the Spanos K and the Poetry K, and everybody in the final round who was complicit in the poetry fake out. I’d like to give thanks as well to Wade Houston, who indirectly cut cards for the AC; Alex Williams, who cut Haksar and found Shaw on the ride down; and Ernie Rose and Ryan O’Hara, who taught me how not to suck.

The Columbia tournament could not have been run better.Scarola did an incredible job making sure that judges were put in critical rounds. There was even time spent trying to put together the best possible JV panels during outrounds. The way the tournament was run made it look a lot more like a Semis Bid tournament than a finals bid tournament. I think the turnout this year in Varsity was 100. I won’t be surprised if it tops 140 next year. So Congrats to Scarola and crew for a great tournament.
I’d like to congratulate Bill Cooper and the ALJ squad on a fabulous tournament. Only 2 students were able to make the tournament, but they made a pretty solid impact. Props to John Monagle on winning top speaker and congrats to Alex “Paco” Castro for winning the JV tournament.
I had the opportunity to judge varsity finals and was able to see two superb debaters. I thought Sam’s gamesmanship was probably the most impressive I’ve seen all year, and I thought Xiaoqi’s 2AR was money. Hope to see both you guys at TOC.

I am still shocked after talking to your kids about how much actual time you both dedicate to the WW team they are lucky to have you both! . . . obviously the favored siblings in the community (most “liked” . . . whatev)

oops that was just one big huge lie. Sorry about that – it said 2006. Call me crazy. I would guess they would be posted in that general area soon.

good job grondahl
can someone explain what went down in finals?

Sorry to disappoint, but nothing particularly “revolutionary” went down in finals. Solid cases on both sides, good debate, etc.
The allusions to the Poetry K are rooted in the notion that when Sam and Xiaoqi flipped, Sam told us that he would really like to run a Poetry K in finals (especially in light of the fact that I had judged him on both the AFF and NEG). No such K was run by him when the round actually happened though there were allusions to it throughout CX as Xiaoqi read the 1AC at a brisk pace. Joke on us, as we wasted about 10 minutes talking about a really potentially interesting debate that didn’t happen (esp. given my well-known love for Slam Poetry and Narrative theory, I was actually really looking forward to hearing about how such a round played out in front of three smart judges). I’m always happy to talk about the value of poetic expression though so I liked the prep regardless. :-)
That said, as noted above, I could not be more impressed with Sam or proud of Xiaoqi for their efforts this weekend.

Besides bidding and beasting, Xiaoqi (and his team) are all cool cats. Best part, they were cool about the joke and CX (altho for a second things got kinda heated).
And I think everyone knows Anjan’s a baller. Ultimately the Poetry K was not run because Sam wasnt expecting to get so far and didnt read it. No one wants cross x questions to be answered with; “uhhhh i dont know either”

I want to echo Sam’s comments about Matt’s dedication to this tournament. Matt spent a long bus ride back from Lexington sharing his ideas for the tournament and talking about judge placement issues, outrounds panels, and the like. His dedication was just awesome.

I second that. Matt Scarola is uber-dedicated, he took time to ask debaters (including me) about how the judging was and took interest in what we had to say. He is also a really nice guy.

I’m glad people enjoyed the tournament, and while I really appreciate all the kind words, I want to make sure they’re directed at the right people. I wasn’t in tab for the paneling of doubles, semis or finals, so the consistently solid judge placement is due to the hard work of Joe, Lynne and all the judges who made themselves available. The tab room, the tournament’s directors (Thomas Lin and Eric Wang) and the Columbia parli team did a fantastic job making everything run smoothly.
And for the record, no member of the parli team without LD experience judged a single round of either JV or varsity LD. To the best of my knowledge, only two members of the team judged: myself and someone who did four years of LD in high school. So as you’ll see when I get the outround panels and post them, our judging was pretty great and you should all come next year. If you were there this year, you should email me your suggestions to make next year even better.

Hey Mr. Cruz,
If you get a chance, could you possibly print the names of the JV Top 10 Speakers. Also, wanted to let you know that Evan was accepted to Stuy. It will be his decision any minute!

Hi,
I am clearing rights to a college textbook, and am trying to reach Ellen Schleifer. Ellen wrote a letter to the NY Times in reply to a column on summer homework, published in 2006. We’d like to reprint her letter in our book (as an example of good writing). Could you please put her in touch with me or provide me with an email address? Thanks!
