Jeffrey Shoung Claims Second Meadows Belt

Patrick Elyas and Jeffrey Shoung
LAS VEGAS, NV – The decision is in. On a 2-1 decision — with Chris Krygier and John Lynch in the majority, and Wesley Craven dissenting — Alhambra High School’s Jeffrey Shuong defeated Loyola High School’s Patrick Elyas to defend the championship he won last season. Jeffrey takes home with him a second seven-pound, boxing-style heavyweight belt to symbolize his achievement at the Kirk L. Knutsen Classic.
Jeffrey is coached by Kevin Tong and Max Stevens. Patrick Elyas is coached by Rami Hernandez and Ranjeet Sidhu.
The tournament is well-known in the region for its unrivaled hospitality and fabulous Las Vegas atmosphere. After two rounds, debaters, coaches, and judges alike were treated to a buffet lunch at the Suncoast Hotel & Casino. Dinner was provided from East Coast Pizza, and debaters were escored by TMS students and adult volunteers to the world-famous Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace, while judges and coaches were let free to explore the city on their own. (Debaters were then taken bowling at the Santa Fe.) Special thanks to Max Lardent for helping transcribe the pairings.

there is no bid in LD… only policy.

There’s only 36 teams at a finals bid tournament?

Say hi to Chris Krygier for me ;)

Policy tournaments, on the whole, are smaller than LD tournaments – especially in areas where policy debate isnt vastly served. I for one, see the TOC bid process also as a means to encouraging debate in lesser-served areas, even though some might disparage the quality of competition.

Quality — rather than quantity — is what makes for the caliber of competition at a tournament.

+1 to Bietz and Adam. It also looks like Meadows attracted teams from multiple states, which is particularly impressive given that, as Bietz noted, policy is not very served in the area.
I’ve heard only excellent things about this tournament and wish I could have spent my weekend in Vegas!

Bietz, we need Slashdot style moderation…
As for policy tournaments, look at the GDS Policy tournament – 64 teams, quarters bid, still considered one of the more difficult policy bids to get.

++ on the /. moderation suggestion. i spend waaaay too much time on /. than i’d care to admit, but it’s worth it because the moderation system makes discussions worth reading.
also, movin’ this bad boy off of fat n’ frumpy wordpress to sleek n’ sexy slashcode (yay for mod_perl) would do wonders for vbd’s internals.

Getting back to the tournament…
Policy field looks solid. LD field has several fine debaters, and the judging looks superb, as does the whole schedule of the tournament (including hospitality). Very nice job done by The Meadows School and good job, Ryan, on reporting the tournament!

I saw Jeffrey last weekend at Wake – very good debater. I’m assuming the judge is Chris Krygier from ASU (and probably with Brophy policy team but not judging policy), and I’m sure he enjoys the new spelling of his last name.
Good job everyone! :)

The basic features of TOC Scoreboard is being incorporated into “Qualifier Watch,” which is available at qualifierwatch.com. The archive format is preferrable since it’s searchable.
Qualifier Watch will be updated this week.

I’d like to point out that in addition to the championship belts, the Meadows Debate Team donates to charitable foundations in the names of all debaters clearing and all speaker award recipients instead of trophies. Special congratulations to Dan and Tim for running an event for the benefit of not only the debate community but our community at large. This tournament is great.
