Angie Hermes and Greg Hertz

NEW HAVEN, CT - Congratulations to Millburn High School’s Greg Hertz and Salpointe Catholic High School’s Angie Hermes! The two debaters faced each other in the final round of the Yale Invitational. The judging panel was chaired by Jed Glickstein and also included Adam Chilton, Anjan Choudhury, Elizabeth Hadaway, Chetan Hertzig, Beth O’Connor, and past champion Matt Shields. On a unanimous decision, the panel awarded the tournament title to Greg.

Greg is coached by Brian Raymond and Peter Petraro. Angie is coached by Adam Nelson and Grant Gilles.

Congratulations are also in order for the team of Andrew Custage and Ross Rubenstein of North Broward Preparatory School and Jenny Marsh and Maryellen Kwasie of Manchester Essex Regional High School. The two teams advanced to the final round of Public Forum debate, where North Broward Prep defeated Manchester to claim the championship.

Jenny and Maryellen are coached by Dan Jewett. Andrew and Ross are coached by Julie Keys and Daniel J. Lewis.

Finally, congratulations to the participants in the final round of J.V. Lincoln-Douglas Debate! Finals featured Jared Dummitt of Stuyvesant High School and Paul Masi of Regis High School. We are awaiting the result of the face-off.

Jared is coached by Julie Sheinman, Rahul D’Sa, and Caitlin Halpern. Paul is coached by Eric Di Michele.

Here is historical reference point that summarizes the first 2 hours of Yale:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045152/

We are seeing plenty of rain, thunder, etc.

    But…we’re happy to be here.

Also, watch out for Angie from Salpointe. This isn’t her getting one lucky weekend - she’s for real. Congrats on getting that long-deserved breakthrough. :)

Also congrats to Micki, you’re phenomenal and deserved to bid, its a shame you and zach had to hit in the bid round. Congrats to Garth for dubz, sorry that this is your second tournament in a row where someone has closed you. Congrats to Jeff on octas of JV. Zach and Deepa, congrats on the bids you guys deserve them, Ardy congrats on the bid round, we’re all starting to suck less. Finally congrats to Zayn for dubz,

Special attention is in order for one Harker DR (jazz hands!), as well as JZ, and the entire Hogan/Mangus/Oyer lab. I’d like to note that Kendra Oyer had six students in the bid round or better, not including the Cmetz/Valley MA dominantion.

I encourage others to also post their barely intelligble one-sentence mini-decisions on the round. My next RFD is going to be “you lost a bunch of unnamed arguments, so you couldn’t win these others.” Sounds fair to me.

I want to thank Jed and everyone else who ran the tournament. I’ve been to Yale 8 years in a row now (which is really pathetic), and the last few years have had consistently outstanding judging pools and panels in all outrounds. I think everyone in tab (as well as people like Jed who actively recruit exceptional judges) work really hard to make that happen, so they should be acknowleged.

There were a lot of competitors who really impressed me this weekend, which was cool especially given the conflicts with Greenhill and Wake. In particular, I think Jason, Sonia, and Micki from Lex are going to do really well this year. I think that Ardevan is better at debate than at FIFA. Also, the coaching and team structure of schools like Hockaday and Scarsdale should probably be models for a lot of other schools, because there’s no way that they can just continue to consistently produce that many good debaters every year simply by like skewed geographical distribution of debate talent.

Finally, I want to congratulate Greg for his amazing performance this weekend. 26 out of 27 ballots is pretty intense, and Greg deserves the win for his hard work, for his ability to identify what he needs to improve on and solve it, and for his ability to step up his game when it matters most. I’m clearly biased, but I expect continued good showings from Greg and Jake this year.

While I am so very thankful to no longer be trying to take pictures of prelim schems on my fuzzy camera (please excuse if some of the picz from this weekend are blurry), I just wanted to say this was a great tournament all around — and I would expect nothing less from Jed, Jeff, and YDA. I was really impressed by the quality of the tournament last year, and even moreso this year. Thank you all! I know my whole team had a great time.

To second what Peter said, I saw some fantastic debating this weekend all through the tournament. In particular and especially, Tim DeSanta from Regis and Sonia Sujanani from Lexington were absolutely superb when I judged them in terms of decision calculus. Also, Zach Aberman and Angie Hermes (who I had the privilege of judging 3 times this weekend) made really interesting and unique arguments that I really appreciated. And it goes without saying that Mr. Hertz, as always, was great!

Of course, I couldn’t possibly fail to mention how proud I am of Team Walt Whitman. Even more than your spectacular showing — which was fantastic to me given how young we are — you really emphasized to me why we all coach. Your a phenomenal team, you work hard, and I’m so thankful to coach you all. I bet a lot of coaches at Yale this weekend feel the same way about their team. Great tournament!
