Corey Metzman Wins Wake Forest LD Title; Stratford Wins Policy

Jeffrey Shoung and Corey Metzman
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Congratulations to the finalists at the Wake Forest National Earlybird! Montgomery Bell Academy’s Corey Metzman and Alhambra High School’s Jeffrey Shoung were scheduled to meet in a final round featuring a panel of Michael Boyle, Jon Cruz, Jason Mika, Hannah Rothman, and Tara Tedrow. Due to flight times, however, Jeffrey chose to forfeit, and the tournament staff declared Corey the champion.
Corey is coached by Billy Tate and Spence Patton. Jeffrey is coached by Kevin Tong and Max Stevens.
Congratulations are also in order for the finalists in junior varsity LD. In the final round, Liangsha Xu of Vestavia Hills High School defeated Rachel Midura of South Lakes High School to claim the title. Liangsha is coached by Brad Toland; Rachel is coached by Leah Greb.
In policy debate, the team of William Karlson and Brian Cole from Stratford Academy bested the team of Karina Piser and Bon Koo from the College Preparatory School in the final round of the very intense competition. William and Brian are coached by Michael Kelley. Karina and Bon are coached by Lexy Green, Nick Coburn-Palo, Mike Burshteyn, Sam Haley-Hill, and Nate Tribble.

PRELIM COVERAGE
So, as each round is posted, I’ll be able to get an update here on VBD, as I am serving as co-director of tabulation in Lincoln-Douglas debate along with the very dedicated Jason Mika, a past member of the coaching staff at Wake Forest.
Round 1
Varsity LD
JV LD
Varsity Policy
I wish judges would show up to their rounds. Eek! But the substitutions have largely been with our ballot table officials, who are all very eager former LD debaters who now compete for Wake Forest — Colin Crawford, Tom DeFranco, Hannah Rothman, Tara Tedrow, and so on — so it hasn’t been quite so much of a headache.
Bronx Science’s speech code is AP. That’s so nerdy.
Round 2
Varsity LD
JV LD
Varsity Policy
Andrew McCumber just asked me to autograph a Victory Briefs handbook. That was a tad surreal. Not going to lie. But I’m flattered, Andrew!
We’re getting there. Now to release the first powered pairings….
Round 3
Varsity LD
JV LD
I need sleep.
And it’s morning time! Interesting Wake Forest fact: the last two champions — Jacob Levi in 2004 and Patrick Mahoney in 2005 — were the thirty-first and thirty-second seeds, respectively. So, the betting person might say to root for the underdog!
Round 4
Varsity LD
JV LD
I just realized none of my brief commentary has uploaded with the pictures. Argh. Yay for retroactive posts!
Round 5
Varsity LD
JV LD
And we are now pairing the final prelims….
Round 6

It should be noted that the rounds don’t really start until this afternoon. I’m about to leave DC in a route taking me through Richmond (and most of VA) to Winston-Salem. I’ll see if I can post driving updates from my laptop as I drive ;)

Funny stuff. It says Alok is debating in one round and judging in the other.
But otherwise, Alok rules.

Brief rundown:
I’m not sure what seed MBA CM was – the brackets were available and should be online on the Wake Forest Tournament website, but I don’t think he was 31 or 32.
I actually was going to be on the non-existent final round’s panel. Let’s give credit where credit is due for almost judging – it’s like almost making a coherent argument ;) – and it was a great tournament, fun was had by many, possibly all, including me, excluding RJ, who clearly did not have fun, but he did learn things he did not know about the health care system or to question his assumptions… I’m still working to get him to register as a Republican, but first I’d have to indict his assumptions about helping others… Need to be a bit more persuasive in that one.

oh yeah, i do know one more thing..
Alhambra JS def Battle Ground AC
2-1 (Tara Tedrow, Michael Boyle, Brad Toland*)

September 17th, 2006 20:02
i think cmetz was 6th seed

Alhambra JS def. Battle Ground AC (Alok Choksi)
2-1 (Tara Tedrow, Michael Boyle, *Brad Toland)
MBA CM def. Kinkaid KB (Katie Bernell)
3-0 (Hannah Rothman, Alok Choksi, Tom DeFranco)
Don’t get me wrong here; Alok Choksi is a baller. That being said, I’m not sure he’s multifaceted enough to debate a round and judge a totally different round at the same time.

Wake Forest doesn’t present speaker awards, thus, there were none to report. (For those interested, however, Palo Alto’s very impressive Rahul Ramakrishnan was the highest-ranked speaker.)
Congratulations to all who competed in the outrounds at this quite competitive tournament. Particular congratulations to Corey and Jeffrey on a very well-deserved and hard-earned advancement to the final round. I expect many more great things to follow from both of these extraordinarily humble and dedicated competitors.
I’d also like to give a shout out to Zachary Levine from Jericho for reppin’ the land of my youth — Long Island — and doing so well at his first-ever tournament outside of New York, and I’d like to particularly congratulate Katie Bernell and Alex Zhang on the first of what are sure to be multiple very well-deserved bids.
