Wouldn’t it make more sense to ADD ON to the previous reports from Grapevine instead of erasing them and substituting the latest results?? Taken to logical extreme you will end up with a one sentence article saying who the winner was.

Suggestion…How about reposting all the breaks from double octas forward so we can see what happened?

I had the opportunity to see a small part of a round David debated at Harvard last year and was very, very, very impressed.

So to answer your question: he’s an excellent debater.

    Koslow,
I guess you can’t read correctly, so I have to explain it to you. Read closely: It’s BECAUSE he didn’t battle due to his graciousness (or whatever) against his unarmed opponent that it was a 5-0 decision. You killed the joke, that’s all.

    I don’t know what’s going on.

For one, I’m pretty certain I don’t speak in any manner similar to “I will not have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.” While it’s true I didn’t send anyone around to scout David, nor did I have the time or resources for a coaching staff to prepare my arguments, I hardly think it was an ethical consideration, especially of chivalrous intent. But I will defend that, though in #23 he misread the joke of #18, Scott Koslow is still literate, despite evidence presented to the contrary in #29. And that #25 and #28 are correct– David McGough is a talented debater and I should be jumped.

Two quick things as I stop working on the tournament for a few moments regarding post #31. It is unfortunate that comments like these have to occur in a forum for what should be a celebration of all who did well this weekend. That said, David McGough is an incredibly hard working debater who works tirelessly to be the best he can. We (the coaching staff)actually do very little…David has an outstanding work ethic and rarely even asks for help…it’s his talent and his talent alone that resulted in a few wins this weekend.

Also, while I dont want to assume the worse about the intent of the post (”I hardly think it was an ethical consideration, especially of chivalrous intent et al”). If it was meant to be negative it is unfortunate the conversation has to go in that direction. We are just working hard trying to compete :)

Congrats to Jane Boyd and Jason Sykes for a great event.

    Best,

    Aaron Timmons

Mr. Timmons, with all due respect, I didn’t mean to insult David at all. I certainly agree that his wins reflect his talent and his talent alone. The post was more a criticism of the inaccuracies of #18.

That I considered my actions a less-than-ethical consideration is to indicate that, given the opportunity, I certainly would have taken it–and we were unwise for not making that opportunity available. In fact, I spent a good time yelling at my sophomores because they chose to lounge around instead of figure out what arguments the other debaters in the semifinals bracket made. And no one can exactly accuse Strake of not having a dedicated coaching staff: “Patrick is coached by Jerry Crist, Murvin Auzenne, and Gary Johnson [and others].” The post was intended with no other meaning, and, in light of this, it’s unfair to assume I was insulting David.

That said, I would like to re-emphasize how talented David is. After state last year (at which my only losses were to Greenhill), I experienced exactly how solidly David debates. And Grapevine is merely another indication of that. Congratulations to David on winning his first tournament.

Sorry for any conflict, I didn’t mean to challenge anyone. I just think a lot of the complaining about illegitimate decisions is ridiculous and harmful.

And “illegit”, when you annoymously post apparent critisism, with no indication that you’re not serious, you have t expect some people won’t get the joke. I’ve seen plenty of people making similar comments to the one you made on VBD, and they were almost always serious.

The debate season is a marathon not a sprint. While Patrick was clearly out debated in finals at Grapevine, there are many, many tournaments remaining.
