Your 2006 National Champion: Douglas Jeffers!

GRAPEVINE/COLLEYVILLE, TX - From a field of over two hundred and twenty competitors emerged the two finalists at the 2006 National Tournament. Indeed, the fifteenth and final round of the competition was adjudicated by a thirteen-judge panel that was charged with the duty of crowning this year’s National Champion in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
The round pitted Dulles High School’s Douglas Jeffers (this year’s Barkley Forum and Big Bronx champion) against Sacred Heart High School’s Liz Mullins (this year’s Massachusetts state champion). On a 10-3 decision, Douglas defeated Liz to claim the national title.
Douglas is coached by Jon Cruz. Liz is coached by Beena Koshy and Chetan Hertzig.

J. Scott Wunn has invited up the committee for this year’s Nationas: David Huston, Glenda Ferguson, J.E. Masters, and co-hosts Cindi Timmons and Jane Boyd. Cindi Timmons and Jane Boyd are wearing particularly fashionable outfits, I might add.
“One of the greatest national tournaments in the history of our organization,” declares Scott Wunn, in summarizing the story.
Scott Wunn has just awarded each of Jane Boyd and Cindi Timmons tickets to anywhere they want in the continental U.S., Hawaii, the Carribbean. A companion can come along with each. (”Aaron, don’t cheer too early!”)

Vice President Gary Spence — who was one of the adjudicators of the final round in LD — is now saying a few words on behalf of the NFL.
“Lincoln understands the importance of effective communication…. Let’s recognize these individuals [the NFL and related volunteers] for contributions they’ve made to the youth of America.”
“Being a part of speech & debate means getting over the fear of losing. It means leadership. We desperately need this in America. There are many different types of leaders.”
Mayor Tate is being acknowledged as a leader.
Vice President spence is talking about Ted Turner and Mother Theresa as great leaders…in the same breath! (”They have the same skill set,” chimes in Lynne Coyne.)

Vice President Spence is now recounting a personal conversation between Mother Teresa and the Pope. “I’m paraphrasing.”

Actually, despite our little jokes, this speech is meaningful. Ted Turner is being presented as a visionary who reshaped his own world, and Mother Teresa as someone who reshaped the world around her.
“I’ll tell you, most of those kids did end up dying anyway.”
And the audience is laughing and clapping about this.

Congratulations to Doug on a victory that is well-deserved and merited. Having heard of the mighty Doug Jeffers since the days when he was a middle school speech competitor with my little sister, it is not surprising that this day has now come.
I would also like to take a quick moment to really send a personal shout out to debate’s biggest celebrity, Jon Cruz. As anyone who was here this week witnessed, Jon took the time to make sure that this VBD coverage reached everyone despite the fact that he was assisting Doug at every step of the way to this championship. I guess you’ve come a long way since I first judged you in your final round at Atlanta in ’03. And you were great then too! I remember thinking to myself, “Who is this guy….and how did a 12 year old get
into NFL Nats?”
Seriously, I knew I was looking at a future champion. And I was right. Ironically, I also judged (and picked up) the LD Nat champ in an early round the same year. So I guess I saw two champs in one day. Cool.

I want to take a moment to thank Jon Cruz, who has been absolutely invaluable as a coach this semester (from about Emory onward). I know that my debating definitely improved after I started working with him, and I think he is one of the most dedicated people in the activity. It says alot about the man that he worked me in around coaching his own enormous team, and serving the community on all of those committees, at absolutely no gain to himself. The community in general, and I in particular, owe alot to this man. Thanks again.

The tournament is over and I am now enjoying working in my yard — my roses were a mess. THANKS to everyone who attended and made this, what I hope, is the BEST National tournament ever. I do have a request. If anyone has any pictures of the impromtu cattle drive held at Grapevine HS on Monday — please send those my way. My dad who was an AG teacher for 38 years really wants to see those. . If anyone has pictures of the tournament held on the Grapevine Complex side or at registration - please send those my way to. OH yes — the airline tickets were a wonderful surprise. I can go almost anywhere in the US, Bahamas, Carribean (sp), and Bermuda but not Hawaii, Alaska, and Las Vegas. i want to second doug jeffers comments about jon cruz. to hear he was coaching and managing the tournament coverage is astounding. his commitment to the activity deserves a “thumbs up” or “atta boy” from all who support this site and the activity. he is even willing to backchannel old geezers like me. jon–get some rest. good job!

I tried posting this already, but I don’t think it went through, so I’ll try again.
This year’s Nationals was even more amazing than I’d hoped it would be, so I want to thank Jane Boyd and Cindi Timmons for that. The tournament was terrific in every conceivable way, and I had the best time I’ve had all year.
Congratulations to Doug on winning, and on turning in an exceptional performance in the final round. I was mighty impressed.
On a more personal note, congrats to Mr. Matthew Benyamin Shields and Ms. Elizabeth Mary Mullins on ending their respective debate careers in style. In addition to being the best students a coach could ever ask for, you guys are great sports and remarkable human beings, and it has been an honor to work with you.

To clarify for the last poster, Dulles has been without a coach for much of this semester, which made it difficult for Doug to travel to tournaments and to compete at them. He and Chris McClure had already been surrogate teammates to Bronx Science students from traveling together, so given the exceptional circumstances, I was happy to help by assisting with logistics and with coaching as well.
While I appreciate Doug’s kind words here, in his speech before finals, and elsewhere, I really deserve very little credit for any of this. I have known him for some time and, frankly, think he’s one of the very best debaters I’ve ever met.
Winning Nationals was his ultimate hope and goal, and I can’t think of a nicer and harder-working person to have achieved such a goal. It’s been an honor to assist in whatever small way I could over these past few months and I’m excited that Doug will be working with Bronx Science students next year as an assistant coach. I hope he can impart his extraordinary humility and dedication as much as his deep argumentative insights.
Many thanks to Jane Boyd and Cindi Timmons for running a fantastic tournament, to Anjan Choudhury and Larry Hosman for their kind words here, and to Kent, Kathy, Greg, and Amy Beth Jeffers for providing a model of family support to the entire debate community.

I can’t speak for others, but speaking for myself, this was an exceptional situation, and motivated by the absence of a coach at Dulles. I wouldn’t really consider what I was doing “coaching on the side” for a “so-called surrogate.” That seems to carry the connotation of being paid, at least to me. I was just trying to help out and be a coach for someone who didn’t have one because of circumstances beyond his control. I didn’t think Doug’s last few tournaments should have been impacted by these circumstances.
Doug knew from the start that as both the director of forensics and the head LD coach at Bronx Science — where I work with a very large number of students — my first priority was rightfully and necessarily to them. Given that there were only one or two tournaments that he attended at which Bronx Science LD debaters were competing, the situation you asked about didn’t occur, and I’m not sure what happens for coaches who work for multiple students or programs, something that happens on both the national circuit and on local circuits. (I felt terrible for Chetan, for example, when Matt and Liz faced each other in one of the late rounds at Nationals.) In any case, since the students on my own team had done work with Doug before to prep for topics and tournaments, and since the team was very eager to have Doug on board as an assistant coach next year, and since, as I mentioned earlier, Doug is an exceptional debater and an exceptional person, I was only too happy to help out in any way I could. Given the rather large workload I have both at Bronx Science (as a coach and a teacher) and at Victory Briefs, I can’t imagine a similar situation happening again in the forseeable future.
But ultimately, this thread is really about the successes of Doug, Liz M., Liz S., Matt, Jeremy, Prashant, and the other LD debaters and competitors from across the events who dominated this past week at Nationals. Congratulations to all! (And thanks again to Anjan, Larry, Jane Boyd, Cindi Timmons, and the Jeffers family.)

Dear Jon Cruz and company (as well as Nick Bubb at Wisconsin Forensics Daily) – thank you for the continued thorough coverage and for being the quintessential cheerleader for this activity. One of the things I find amazing in this activity is the high preponderance of students, coaches and parents who give so much of their time and energy and receive so little – other than self-actualization – in return. Though forensics may use competition as a means of attracting people together to test their prowess and challenge their skills, I find that more and more, a community of love and support unites us behind the common causes of education, advocacy and empowerment.
To Jane Boyd and company – I said it before awards, and I’ll say it again: you rocked! This tournament was one of the friendliest, and easiest in terms of venues and amenities. As the national tournament has grown in participation, you were able to meet our needs and exceed our expectations. All of the little touches, such as the Stetson hats for champions, and the bluebonnet flowers for coaches rounded off the local charm in harmony with the dignity of the ceremony. This was the first time since 2001 (Oklahoma City), where both the Congress House and Senate were together, and with other events at various points of the week. That was most appreciated.
Finally, to my team – I am so proud of you. Eva Lam, with your amazing amounts of intellect, talent, compassion and dignity, you have been a role model for so many, including your coach. Sarah Hinkfuss – arguably the most humble student I’ve worked with – your driven motivation, focused attitude and considerate persona have made for an inspiring combination. I wish you both much success at Harvard and beyond!

My proudest moment as a coach occured this year with Arun and Jonathan in Public Forum. I want to congratulate ALL of the PFD teams at Nationals, I witnessed superb debate on a VERY tough topic.
Thank you to Victory Briefs for covering PFD as tightly as LD and Policy this year.
All of Myers Park: You did an amazing job at nationals and represented yourselves very well in every round of every event! Congrats to Andrew West for the Karl Mundt trophy, he has been waiting for a LONG time to obtain that prize!
Congrats as well to EVERYONE from North Carolina who competed and especially to those 7 congress students who BROKE! Well done!

Just to supplement what Jon wrote - it was heartbreaking indeed when Matthew and Liz hit. This was the third time it’s happened this year, and my policy has been to completely stay out of the way when it does. I didn’t watch any of the three rounds, and I didn’t help either prepare for them. I have to commend both students on handling the situation in such a mature and professional manner.

Just a few notes I thought i’d add…sorry about the length.
To Douglas, sincere congratulations. It’s been a pleasure to judge you and difficult to coach against you. We were very curious about that NC and decided to just keep you from telling whatever story seemed to be rolling over opponents. Before the round with Shif I said “just don’t play whatever game he’s playing”. Jeremy came back with a knowing grin and said “I played his game.” We are absolute believers in the hate the game not the player philosophy…and Shif and I both were satisified to go out on that note, especially to someone that dominated the tournament like you did. I look forward to working with you at VBI.
To Liz Mullins, outstanding performance. Your Semifinal NR was fantastic. I’m really first and foremost a spectator of debate…I love to see those moments where someone pulls an incredible maneouver (think soccer: I’ll watch a whole game just for that one sweet bicycle kick). You are a credit to your coaches and to the activity.
To Josh Anderson and Tim Case, you both know what you did. And I’ll never forgive you. But if I do, I’ll probably tell you that your support at this tournament went above and beyond. Our little temporary triumvirate proved that the debate community can thrive on cooperation, respect and friendship. The lesson for all debaters here is to hold on to your friendships, always stay open to making new ones and as we would say in Eugene ‘just try to be chill.’ Case: I owe you money. Janderson: I’m working on the modules right now :)

Congrats to Matt on another fantastic performance, putting a fitting end on a two- (actually, let’s make that three-) year domination of all things debate. As the posts on this thread alone demonstrate, there are a variety of people involved in LD who, like Matt, show an extroadinary devotion to and sheer love for this activity. Few, however, are simultaneously able to put the activity they love into perspective, to care more about the position than the win, and to never let competitiveness get in the way of friendship. These qualities have made Matt a rare gem on the circuit these last few years. So has the fact that, incidentally, he happens to be one of the greatest debaters this activity has ever seen.
