BREAKING NEWS: Topic List Released
GRAPEVINE, TX – Lexy Green has just handed me the list of ten potential topics for Lincoln-Douglas debate. I’m pretty excited by a lot of the topics on this list. What do you think of the resolutions?
In United States courts, victim impact statements ought to influence sentencing.
The precautionary principle ought to guide environmental regulations.
The actions of corporations ought to be held to the same moral standards as the actions of individuals.
On balance, violent revolution is a just response to political oppression.
The United States government ought to allocate humanitarian aid to foreign nations based on the need of recipients rather than its own interests.
A just society ought not use the death penalty as a form of punishment.
In the United States public university admissions, socioeconomic disadvantage ought to be a higher priority than race.
In the United States, the federal government ought not limit the autonomy of local school districts to determine their own curriculum.
The United Nations’s obligation to protect global human rights ought to be valued above its obligation to respect national sovereignty.
On balance, in its trade agreements the United States ought to value the welfare of workers in developing countries over its economic gains.

Hmm…these seem pretty decent. A few of the topics are kind of dry in terms of subject matter, but they are still very debatable.
On a side note, the violent revolution topic sounds a lot like the oppressive gov. Vs. No gov. topic, which was terribly fun to debate.

These all sound pretty legit.
I really hope we get to debate environmental regulation. I actually just discovered this pretty cool report entitled “Punishing Protest” that will be published by the National Lawyers Guild in September, 2006. Theres an entire chapter on the “Green Scare”. I’m sure that a lot of it directly applies.

wow…so returns to “on balance” and “ought to” language for topics, here. I also find it interesting that the trend of putting the value in the topic is now over. I really liked that trend, so that’s too bad, but I really like the topics as a whole. I also wish that the idea of a “negative value” (eg unjust in the ED topic) had been kept…really thought that was the key to balanced debate on that topic, but maybe that’s just me.
That said, these are pertinent, good topic – good job, wording committee!

Most are good, but some (death penalty) seem very potlitically charged and I’m not a huge fan of US specific topics, but other than that, their good.

how come all the camps are doing the violent revolution topic?

Not all camps are using the violent revolution topic. KNDI is using a topic which could still possibly be used in September/October or November/December: A just government should provide healthcare to its citizens.
