Nikita Lalwani, Ken Hershey, and Matt Salant
IOWA CITY, IA – Congratulations to Scarsdale High School’s Matt Salant and Ken Hershey, who closed out this year’s Great Midwestern Novice Debate Championships! Matt and Ken are coached by Joe Vaughan.
Major thanks to Liz Vieira and GNMC director Cyndy Woodhouse for providing the pairings throughout the tournament.

Good luck people debating in front of Cyndy Woodhouse… I hear she has changed her paradigm and now like kritiks, especially ones that are badly butchered from obscure authors that have very little academic value. Of course, it could also be the date and my lame attempt at a joke. The dichotomy of these two jokes is what makes it a true “April Fools”, since you never know where my sarcasm ends and my humor begins.

COngratulations to Matt and Ken. Needless to say, they are fantastic debaters and certainly are worthy of the shared title. Congrats to Nikita as well because getting coached over in semis is just as good and she is just as awesome.
As a general statement, the Scarsdale novices are awesome at both debate and life. Especially Oliver Roth who a)does magic tricks b) can break dance c) is great at tic-tac toe and d) regularly gets into fist fights with Matt Shields.

Thanks to everyone for the positive comments. Special thanks to Vaughan, Shields, and Salant who tought us how to handle some of the…interesting case positions that we hit here.
Also congradulations to Nell, Matt H., Rush, and Marcus, for they all debated well this weekend.
*To Jon Cruz:
-As a minor correction, it was actually Matt who coached over Nikita in semis. I beat Dowling Cathlic AR on a 3-2 in semis.
Thanks everyone.

First, the last judge on that semi’s panel was Neally.
Wow, this tournament gave me faith in the future of debate. Highland Park JJ was incredible, far and away the best novice I’ve ever seen, how far she got is not indicative of how good she is, and watch out for this girl next year.
And all the SLP and Lynbrook kids I saw also made lots of good, intelligent arguments, and know how to win technical debates. Lynbrook LY in particular did an amazing job of being persuasive/speaking pretty and still thoroughly pwning her opponent on the technical debate.
Hopkins EM is another force to be reconed with. He had a local circuit style but strategic arguments and cases.
And of course Scarsdale had the top 4 seeds, all undefeated, and MS was 6/0, first speaker, and won the tournament.

A more formal congrats to the Scarsdale novices who rocked the great state of Iowa this weekend:
Matt Hershey – the man.
Ken Hershey – the man with the plan.
Nikita – will never lose an outround in her life.
Moretti – should’ve stuck with basketball if he can only go 9-1 on the weekend.
D-Rush – should’ve done his math homework.
and Matty – wow, what a stud; maybe sometime you can show me how to cash in on the genes?
Nice job guys.

Novice Nats was quite the tournament. My judges gave lengthy oral critiques to back up their decisions (particularily Elizabeth Schmikler and Liz Viera), and I definitely learned a lot from them.
Big ups to Scarsdale – especially David Rush, the only opponent I’ve ever had who almost made me concede after his 1AR – for closing out the tournament; they are by far the best novice team I’ve seen this year.
And of course, congrats to all the Lynbrook novices who went. We are truly on fire.

Thanks much to Cyndy for putting on an amazing tournament as usual.
Marcus Moretti from Scarsdale, Liz Yang from Lynbrook and Anne Roth from Dowling were all among the most impressive novices I’ve ever seen, and, though I didn’t get a chance to judge them, I heard very good things about Matt Salant and David Rush from Scarsdale, Narayan from Lynbrook, and Jillian Jordan from Highland Park from everyone who judged them. Congratulations to everyone who did well on succeeding in an amazingly tough novice pool!

well whatev liz… you should’ve been all like EXTEND THE TURN TO THAT A PRIORI THINGY AT THE BOTTOM which would have PWN3D randomly, but I guess we both igNORED that argument.
Hmmmm… actually our round was probably my most fun round… except for maybe 3rd round when i was all like STRAIGHT REF CAP GOOD without understanding any of those blocks I was reading…
whatev people who write 3000-word scripts should get HUNGRIED… but congrats mr. coach ( i leave you anonymous) for using only 6 hours of prep time to beat a 14-year-old novice given 3 minutes… i’m just UBER impressed. I mean… ()\/\/|\|463 of that kind is what I aspire to when I grow up.
anyway… amazing tournament… UBER well-run and stuff… and I’ve realized that iowa has more than just cornfield so yeah.
Also, congrats to Matt Salant, Ken Hershey, and Nikita Lalwani for closing out. AMAZING JOB GUYS (and assertive girl ;))
And congrats to the rest of the Scarsdale crew, namely Marcus Moretti, who barely missed closing out, Matt Hershey, who dropped on a 2-1 in partial dubs, and Nell Brodsky, who almost broke.
To reiterate, this was one of the most fun tournaments ever and I hope to PWN some of you beastly novices at TOC in a couple years ;) ;)

Ay David Rush, I was the 3rd round guy- Congrats on thoroughly pwning me. I had never gone against someone without a case (though I did go against someone that never refuted me, haha) and it was a good learning experience. WHY DID I NOT MENTION THE STANDARDS??! Ah well, I found it pretty funny when my captain chewed you out. I think you Scarsdale people were taking debate steroids, or something or another…
