Matt Shields Defends Harvard Title

Matt Shields and Ryan Cooper
CAMBRIDGE, MA – Congratulations to Scarsdale High School’s Matt Shields and Westlake High School’s Ryan Cooper for advancing to the final round of the Harvard National Invitational! The tournament — long billed as the “U.S. Open of Lincoln-Douglas Debate” — featured 350 competitors in the varsity division. On a 6-1 decision, Matt defeated Ryan to claim the Harvard title for a second straight year. He was also top seed and top speaker.
Matt is coached by Joe Vaughan and Chetan Hertzig. Ryan is coached by Tommy Clancy.
Major congratulations are also in order for Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel and Scarsdale High School’s Matt Salant for clearing to finals in the junior varsity competition. Like its varsity counterpart, the J.V. division featured 350 competitors. In the final round, Jake defeated Matt to win this year’s title. Matt is coached by Joe Vaughan. Jake is coached by Dean Rhoads and Petey Gil.
In policy debate, Greenhill’s Mathew Andrews & Stephen Polley faced Chattahoochee’s Brittany Cambre & Maggy Warden in one semifinal round, while Georgetown Day’s James Brockway & Zack Beauchamp debated Gulliver Prep’s Julio Rojas & Kathy Bowen in the other.
Many thanks are in order to Shoshana Gordon-Ginsburg, Eleanor Meegoda, Nixxi Chen, and Ryan Hamilton for their assistance in coverage this weekend.

My only question is-why would anyone let michael jaskiw judge? that ukrainian is a trick.
Ask him for philosopher jokes if he judges you.

LD is dying becuase of circut elitists who run the tournaments and are the prominent coaches and are able to charge thousands for kids to go to their camps and encourage stupid argumentation which is too fast and has no value whatsoever other than for me to criticize.

I think LD is in trouble because many debaters refuse to adapt to their judges.
That is, many debaters do not effectively communicate their arguments to their specific judges, but instead insist that the judge is “illegit” if the judge does not understand the argument, refuses to vote on a blip, and whatnot. I also think LD is in trouble because many judges are afraid to admit when they do not understand an argument, or why an argument affirms/negates, and vote on said arguments, allowing a perpetuation of “stupid argumentation.”
Thoughts?
P.S. I think this is a far greater problem than camp directors perpetuating bad arguments at the tournaments that they run. (I don’t understand how they’d be able to do this, if they’re running the tournament and not judging. And, of course, I can only speak for the camps at which I work, but I know we encourage positional argumentation and an understanding of the philosophies and theories employed in rounds, and it’s something we’re striving to do better and better each year.)
But, again, I think the problem is a more generalized unwillingness to communicate effectively (and instead communicate only to a preconceived notion of a “good,” “legit,” “cool,” “circuit” judge) than some sort of organized conspiracy by tournament directors.

As a debater, I see other debaters make these statements a lot in the Las Vegas debate community. There’s a couple of schools that travel to national tournaments regularly, and then when they compete in-town for State or Districts or other tournaments. The other debaters often complain about the judges being “lay” and illegit. I had this problem after I learned the more technical aspects of LD; however, I learned to correct this procedure. I think debaters don’t give lay judges the credit they deserve. If debate is supposed to emulate politicians in the future or even just being persuasive, then debaters should debate in a way understandable by the judge. Thus, I turn to my personal theory “If the judge isn’t flowing, then don’t flow. Take notes instead, its probably what the judge is doing.”

i rarely check vbi…but i’m happy to see your last post John. I hate and simply cannot stand debaters who get upset because of “illegit” judging. especially in co where people complain about how our style isn’t toc or national circut style… yeah it’s different, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. that’s debate. come on and adapt. the best people do…

Debate is the essence of persuasion and adaptation. The way you tell a good debater apart from a bad debater is the way they adapt. Many people have been impacted by the shadow of older and more technical team members, and have lost their ability to adapt to un experienced judges. I find it a common problem especially in sophomore year. As freshman, debaters are fresh in the whole technical scene. They do not fully understand the rules, do not have a full grasp of theory, case writing, or advanced argumentation. Their cases and arguments are stock, but this is what makes them easy to understand and persuasive. As they go to camp and participate in tournaments more often, they get caught up in the debate pop culture, the technical aspect, and start going to vbi.com often(haha). They are influenced by the shadow of an older more technical team member and make a quick transition into a technical debater thinking that is what is best. They learn the hard way, through losing at lay tournaments, the problem they have. Debate is all about adaptation to the judge and the scene. If its a mom/dad judge, go slow, logically, and easy to understand in comparison to your opponent whos laying out a 20-point prong attack against your 2 reasons about justice being defined as giving each his due. If its an experienced judge or panel, you can be more flexible. The ultimate purpose of debating someone is to get the judge or the public to buy your idea over the opponent. If debate comes down to that, then if you lose a round, its all your fault, because you were not able to prove why you were better.

I am not particularly afraid of retribution, but I must agree with the fearful poster above that LD is being devalued by the circuit elitist approach. In my opinion, the value of debate is the ability to formulate persuasive arguments and present them eloquently, not to develop off topic, snake oil salesman delivery speeches designed to obscure the real meaning of the resouton. Those of us with this opinion are labelled “lays” and are clearly not in the real debate crowd. Whether or not there is a financial incentive to promoting obscure debate remains to be discussed. Best of luck to all debaters this weekend!

Any way we can get a reporter from Fox News to be “embedded” with a debate team? Is whats-her-name still camping out in Aruba with daily coverage – maybe Greta Van Sustren could do it. I’d listen to the segment on NPR, but they seem to always be asking for money in some pledge drive… and if the Simpsons has taught me anything, it’s that asking for pledges has some mafia like enforcement.
I love the way the weather works – last weekend it snowed in DC, this Wednesday it reached 70s (t-shirt weather), then today it went from 40ish to a low of 17 and about 19 degrees right now with the normal 10-20mph wind gusts. I can only imagine how much fun it is further up northeast.
LD in trouble? Meh… Things change, and only change and complaints are constants. If you repeat something often enough, it seems to become accepted – that CX is dead, LD is dying, and PFD is the replacement… I’ll believe it when I see it. There’s no activity that’s immune from critics both within and outside of it; no one has ever told me what a unique problem in LD is – either they say they fear retribution and say the national “style” is bad, or they say they got “screwed” out of a win. If you want to externalize your problems, go ahead – but if the only constant in all your problems is your individual participation, it would seem that maybe you should ask yourself what your expectations are and what reality is, and then figure out how you want to traverse the difference in a method that suits you. I don’t know that complaining on the internet is a productive method of doing this, but feel free to have at it.

Granted, in order to be successful at LD it is imperative that the debater be able to adapt to their particular judge, but I think that is the problem. Arguments are no longer good for argument’s sake. We have some judges (no names) who will dock you speaker points for using stock arguments, while others won’t understand unless you use stock arguments.
I recently had the pleasure of watching a final round at nationals in 1996, Dan Vukelick won. One thing I noticed was that the arguments were much more oratorical, with empahsis on a few well organized arguments, rather than five value clarifications and 3 off case posistions.
Overall though, the point originally stated is that LD’s real life applicability is beginning to die. Granted LD is still great competition, and it is still fun (most of the time), but it is hard to get as much practical skill. For one, no one will ever know the judge’s pargidigm in the real world. I think that it is great that VB posts paradigms (can’t spell), but at the same time I believe that it is a complete detriment. I believe that the mark of a great speaker is one who is able to pursuade most without drastically changing his/her style.
A great speaker controls the audience, and doesn’t let the audience control him.

Adaptation is good, but a few judges are realy ridiculous.
Alot of people dont care because the bias favors them, that since they dont understand non-stock issues, judges that are againt it benefit them. Ignoring certain argumentation is realy harsh atleast warning should be given. Its like me having this policy: I drop stock arguments
I think judges should all strive to be more “tab” while students should try to be more adaptive. That way we can compromise, otherwise they’ll be some jerk debater running some crazy case onfront of a realy tightly wound judge just to incite rage.
We all need to work towards being more acceptive of different styles. Personally i want to be able to convince a “lay” judge as much as a “tab” judge, both forms of argumentation are imporatant and equaly valuable. I think that condemning either side is bad.

Dexter, I know most of the judges in Vegas have never head of Locke, Rousseau, or other stock philosophies. However, all that means is that the debater has to explain the philosophy a bit. I still remain to my original viewpoint that writing a judge illegit because they haven’t done debate before. I also know judges when faced with two equal debaters where they can’t decide the victor will result to arbitray methods to decide the winner. A good debater can overcome both of these through adaptation and if the judge still doesn’t understand. The better debater should realize this and talk better. Granted, thats my own personal opinion.

why does michael boyle feel the need to constantly add his unwanted commentary to every single round, by guessing squirrels from the comfort of his own chair or from the halls of the tournament where he’snot judging?

Dear “Shut Up Michael”–since you didn’t have either the courage or the courtesy to sign your name to your post, I have to assume that you went 1-5 this weekend, with the win being the 6th round Bye.

RJ: Yeah, I knew you’d miss me. I’ve actually been a bit under the weather the past couple weekends and just made the decision about a week ago not to go (I had something lined up and backed out) and just enjoy a weekend without adjudicating rounds. I thought perhaps you had been the 1, deciding to vote for neither side, saying only that I, as the judge, have lost my time, patience, and good temperment as a result of this round.
Shut Up: Hey Fleeger, what’s up? I drive you down to Tucson, pay for your food, drive back (and even stayed awake most of the time while driving), and this is how you repay me? I think I might come down and make a visit to your place near Gammage next time I’m in town – I think there’s been a serious miscommunication somewhere along the line. Criticizing people on the internet and stalking their comments is contrary to the good nature and demeanor that I espouse – think positive, be positive – you know that’s my motto.
Michelin: Since when have you been in the Northeast tournament result forecasting business?
Duby & ALJ: Congrats job Meah on the qual. Good job Duby on getting to Boston despite my forgetting to talk to you about the travel arrangements you wanted booked.

semis (according to ali):
Scarsdale MS vs Hillsborough PR
Loyola-Blakefield JH vs Westlake RC
ps: not to get involved in this little AZ flame war here, but i really dont understand bill cooper’s comment that posting anonymous insults means you dont win debate rounds. not sayin’ that i hate mboyle’s commentary (i usually just skip over 90% of comments anyway unless someone talks smack – in which case i read intently), but there are plenty of good people who say mean things. im also not sure why having a bad record is a reason to discount someones opinion about who/what is annoying.

Before I talk about anyone else at all I’m going to send a huge congrats to Micki on completing her qual, you are absolutely amazing and deserve this so much. As for the other members of my team, congratulations to Sonia for clearing again, you beast, and to Kate for *at least* quarters of JV (if only complete results were up). Also to the other 10-11 debaters reppin Lex this weekend thanks for making Harvard a blast. Sameer, by being the only Marx labber to clear you can take Zayn’s award of “most likely to win Villager” as he has thus voted himself off the Marx island. Congrats to my roommate Alan from NDF on dubs. Great job to Scarsdale for an awesome weekend, Matt for winning, the other Matt on getting qualled over a three week period, yet another Matt for finals in JV, Neil for the bid round, Shrenil on trips and picking up to some tough people in prelims, Jon for quarters, and Marcus for being such a cool guy. More congrats to Jeff Fox for picking up his first bid, and Josh for finishing his qual. Also for Peter, Hannah, and Jing for making it to trips. Hannah good luck with your at large, you’re awesome and I’m sure you’ll get it. Oh, and before I forget, Poorav deserves major congrats for semis at this tournament. I think that’s all but I forget anyone I’m sorry.
P.S. shout out to Mr. Matt Scarola for making it past the worst bid round pairing for him ever (Adhar and Micki)

Concerned Debater (#97) -
I don’t know what Micki’s triples panel was, so I can’t specifically speak about that round. However, I sincerely hope your comment is actually a question (to which I’m sure the answer is no) and not an insinuation of something else. There are plenty of reasons why I’m sure Micki’s success wasn’t a result of “repping out,” but the easiest two are:
1. The people she hit in doubles and octos both went to NDF
2. None of the judges on either of those panels are associated with NDF, or (to the best of my knowledge) have any reason to arbitrarily advantage people who went to that camp
So while I could go on and on about Micki’s hard work and intelligence, I think those two simple little facts make your comment, if an insinuation, look pretty stupid.
Then again, I am associated with NDF, and as all of the kids in my lab can tell you, I hack every single chance I get, and this chance to defend Micki is no different.

1. special recognition to scarsdale soph kyle tatz, who was the only debater who lost only one round and didn’t clear (a misreading of the schem caused him to forfeit the 3-1 round). he ended up 4-2, but 0 speaks from the forfeit round doomed him…much congrats anyway for a performace to build on for next year
2. just a quick glance at this year’s pannels vs. last years shows that harvard is making an effort to improve itself…i also believe judges were placed in the late prelim rounds, so it’s definately a good sign going forward.
3. shieldsy, what can i say man? awesome.

I had more fun at this tournament than at any other tournament in my debate career for like – a million different reasons.
To make a long story short though – I had GREAT judging all throughout the tournament. Additionally, my coaches coop, sam duby, and john sheffield did so much to make sure I was prepared for this tournament – that I couldn’t thank them enough.
The tournament was smooth and I wouldn’t have wanted to finish out my circuit career in any other way.
Also – congrats to all that finished their quals and a SPECIAL CONGRATS TO JEFF FOX! – U GOT A BID MAN!!!! NJ IN-HOUSE IN OCTOS *thnx for the good round – I’m SOOO happy for you!!*

There was a whole lot of subbing into panels this weekend.
I wanted to commend the Harvard parli team for being so personable and for running an efficient and friendly ballot table. Keeping such an enormous tournament on time is no small feat. Congrats to everyone in elims, particularly Matt and Ryan, two extremely nice, polite guys and exceptionally talented debaters, who engaged in an interesting and very close final round (which bears mentioning; I hate how the actual numerics of a desicion can be so misleading). I know Harvard is notorious for being…well, Harvard, but I think it’s universally a good time, and this weekend was no exception.

Congrats to Matt Shields and Ryan Cooper for a great final round. It’s always great to see when nice guys finish first.

Congrats to:

2. Miles Brundage for also qualling (Florida kids don’t get my NE love, but he beasts at life anyways)
3. Rushabh Doshi for finally bidding this year. Watch out for him next year–he is ridiculously talented and even more underrated. The Randolph machine hasn’t stopped yet.
4. Last, but not least: Matt Shields and Ryan Cooper for being good at debate.

This tournament was . . . big. I think I may have left two novices, a “guerrilla” irony flow written only in pictures, and many multiple conditional counterplans that I intend to read against Chetan in the down-all round at TOC. Please let me know if you find the find the flow. :-)
Best Quote of this Tournament:
“Anjan, I just showed up for the food in Harvard Square.”
-Ryan Cooper
A day later, I see Coops winning a big shiny bowl for 2nd place. Congrats to both him and Matt on great performances AGAIN this weekend!
And also, congratulations to people who finished their quals — which I believe was Aks, Josh, and Micki. I’ve had the pleasure of judging them all this year on several occasions and I’m glad they will be in Kentucky.
In Quarters:
Loyola Blakefield JH vs. Hollis Brookline AH was also a 2-1. At that point, I had lost track of who was judging what in these rounds.
I was too busy trying to sell T-shirts on the streets.
I couldn’t end a long rambling tournament post without an acknowledgement of W.T. Woodson’s own Caitlin Halpern, who made a great showing in her final TOC Qualifier of her career. We are very very proud of you!

I think it’s particularly cool that Mr. and Mrs. Shields were able to watch their son debate finals.
NO congratulations to David Lebowitz being super-mean as always. He’s clearly so sarcastic and cruel. And no thanks to Anjan for making me look stupid.
Yay for Doug and Xiao for reppin’ the alma mater. (It’s cool to see South in outrounds and in the bid round!) And, of course, congratulations to Matt, Hannah, Jing, and Sarah for reppin’ Bronx Science.
It also occurred to me during that at this point, I’ve seen just about every debater who has qualified to the TOC this season — which is in and of itself insane — but this was my first chance to see Susan Morrow debate. I was really impressed and expect even more great things for the remainder of this season and next season as well.

I forgot to congratulate Matt Salant, who I judged at Lexington just a few weeks ago. From what I saw (and what I’m hearing now), you definitely deserve this. Congrats.

Anjan, not only did I find that flow, but I’ve already prepped out 93108473108473.314 answers to each conditional counterplan, and my answers will always outweigh your case on timeframe because I can read them in under twelve seconds, and I have post-fiat implications and you don’t. (And I haven’t even mentioned my supersecret Rawlsian underview, but all I’m saying is if you drop that, it’ll turn YOUR WHOLE ADVOCACY!) So bring it.

Myers Park LD would like to recognize Arun Das for again succeeding to have his name butchered (the ballots/schems read Myers Park DA) and clearing to trips, a decent finish to the last circuit tournament.

also isaac breaking 2 tournaments in a row is pretty awesome too, and jacob on #9 is it?
hannah’s 20 turns in one of her nc’s, was, well, beautiful

First and foremost congratulations to Matt and Ryan for being two totally awesome people and Najeeb Khuda, Steven Campisi, and Michael Saldariagga for being great teammates all year and breaking at Harvard! Also, an apology to all who broke, whose space we have invaded.
This was supposed to be a short comment on a hot button in LD debate but it turned into something so much more…so with out further ado I give you
J.R.’s First Treatise on LD Debate
(And Second Post EVER so you know it has to be important, Lolz)
(LHPS I’m sorry I’ve broken one of our rules about posting on VBD but what are you going to do.)
I’m glad this topic has come up on VBD because I find this to be an oft had discussion at numerous tournaments. It is truly interesting listening to people like Mr. Marx (Coach of TOC champions at Valley and world renowned speech coach), Mr. Clemens (My coach, the man who got me into debate, and possibly one of the coolest people on the circuit), Pat Fitch (Coach and LHP alum), Josh Marshall (Ditto) Jon Cruz (I heard he is kind of a big deal), and other Debaters (all you Hand Hug recipients you know who you are) and what I find is that we all seem to be expressing the same ideas but in different words.
(A comment on Stock/Circuitry Positions)
While I have run off case and find CLS intellectually stimulating ; I also love Nozick and have come to the personal conclusion that Rawls is an idiot. Debate is a balance of Modern and Postmodern ideas and to hinder anyone from running something or being turned off by stock/circuitry debate is the true problem. I have no doubt that LD is a persuasive event but I also refuse to believe that it should destroy our community’s creative potential. There is a fine line between being bogged down by the technicalities of debate and, also being shackled to debating only one idea in different clothing. We should embrace all positions that are logically constructed and hey, if they are not constructed properly, then I hope our training as critical thinkers will allow us to show them for the true frauds they are. I mean, I’m told in my English class (shout out to Mrs. McGinn) that an argument is academically true if it is logically constructed, why not apply that same idea to LD?
(A Comment on Speed/Persuasion/Technical Argumentation)
First, speed. Honestly I have spoken fast, and sometimes to fast (Dubs at Emory). It is a fine line to walk, and I try to do it. There are numerous logical arguments for both sides of this issue but I truly feel that a) if you do not want speed, say no speed and that should be good for everybody, b) judges should be honest with themselves (don’t say you are fine with speed and then be mean to me because you didn’t think I was going to go that fast); just throw something at me and I’ll slow down. Yet, even in the first NFL championship round (I watch these things because I’ve got that kind of time) the person who won was going “briskly,” thus, it is obvious that this isn’t something new. Second, persuasion. It is great to be persuasive (I would like to think I can employ “Used Car-Salesmen” like charm in rounds.) But, when we focus solely on persuasion and ignore arguments then we make this event into nothing but glorified OO. Finally, technical argumentation. LD is about the resolution; if we stripped away the jargon some of these technicalities we argue about make sense. I have seen old round when they said, “My opponent isn’t affirming the resolution for two reasons and this is bad for LD because…” What is this but a glorified Topicality violation? Also, our jargon has its merits, such as allowing us to make more arguments or explain the one’s we make more in depth. Thus, why not allow both? Such careers, such as Lawyers/Doctors/Politicians, are all contingent upon understanding the broad and narrow ideas of there respective fields, I think it would stink to have a doctor that knows that you have an STD but doesn’t know exactly how to treat it or what you can expect from it in the future. Likewise, from what I understand about being a lawyer (all gathered from the excellent show Law & Order) our legal system is a series of technicalities that can decide the outcome of a trial. Thus, over concentration on either technicalities or persuasion does our future a great injustice.
(The true problem with LD)
I guess my question is a rather hackneyed one, why can’t we all just get along? Instead of working on a way to allow one “correct paradigm” to rule LD why don’t we agree to coexist? If we become too focused on our ideologies and shut out others it can lead nothing to but violence (either intellectually or physically) I mean, wasn’t that why the crusades occurred? I know I don’t want to eat babies and try to win back the Holy Land so I hope we learn to compromise. The great David Salant and I had a round last year at Yale where the judge thought we should have reached a compromise at the end of the round. We both laughed it off but more and more I think maybe he was the sanest of all of us. Maybe debating in absolutes, “The resolution must be affirmed/negated categorically” makes our world too black and white. Instead, we should allow for the world to be different shades of grey. If anything, being exposed to such a group of dynamic and diverse individuals should expand our horizons, instead of forcing us into opposing camps.
The world of debate is supposedly “changing” and I happen to enjoy some of the “changes” yet, when people become shortsighted we end up arguing about trivial things rather then focusing on the true meaning of debate (whether it is OO, HI, Congress, LD, or PFD). Very simply LD isn’t about “adapting,” running “stock” or “circuit” positions, rather it is something that we nerds (whether as a coach or competitor) enjoy doing. It is a way to get to know people who let you grow as a debater BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY as a person. I love LD and all it has given me and I truly hope we can arrive at a respectful agreement that allows all of our views to be incorporated in an event that I truly hope lives forever.
God Bless you all, whether you think I’m interesting or want to slip me some hemlock.

I’m pretty darn confident in both my debating skills and in my intelligience. Unless you intend to post your name and a) dropped fewer than 3 ballots the entire weekend and made it to quarters or better or have a better debate record than me this year or b) have better academic achievements to support your appeal to superior intellectual abilities then we can pretty much consider this conversation over.

Few things
Congrats to Josh Meah/ Bill Cooper on a breakout weekend and Arthur L. Johnson’s first ever qualification to the TOC.
Props to Dave McGough on 2nd speaker and going 5-1. Sorry you happen to be the most unlucky person ever. What is it now 5-2 AV/Blake/GBS and miss on speaks 3 times? Dont’ sweat it! You’ll be busting people up at TFA/Districts and all next year.
Finally, RandomGuy 1 word SCOREBOARD. Gordon’s a great debater and has over the last few years matured into one of the nicest and most thoughtful guys I know. So take the hate somewhere else or man up and post your name.
Does anyone know where I can find Victor’s or Mike’s email?

All the hating on Jon is so random….he’s clearly one of the best debaters in the country, and for some reason seems to be the one to draw the most ire out of all the nameless wannabes who post not-clever-at-all comments to compensate for their 2-4 performance.

Hey Boyle,
This time the person who said shut up wasn’t me. I nearly always post as my name. Although, I have no problem signing on to the sentiments expressed in his post.
I wanted to take a moment to defend the intelligence of Jon Gordon… He split a sandwich with me after the semi’s round I judged and it was a really good sandwich which means his ordering skills are very good. I am sure he meant that to be the c) point is if you can show that you are as good at ordering sandwiches you can question his intelligence. I find it hard to believe anyone in the country can best him on this level. He has like 12 sandwich T.O.C. bids.
