Debate History: A Spotlight on the Barkley Forum Tutorials
It’s time to gear up for the fifty-first annual Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University. As one of the oldest major invitational debate competitions in the nation — predating the TOC by twenty-one years, for example — the Barkley Forum has prided itself in unique traditions and tournament honors. One of its most famous traditions are its named outrounds, allegedly a means of evading Georgia blue laws. The ten people honored — five in policy debate, five in Lincoln-Douglas debate — are some of the most respected coaches in the history of the activity. Let’s find out more about them.
THE PELHAM DEBATES (Policy)
The thirty-two teams vying for the Silver Key first debate in the Anne Douglas White Tutorial. White coached at Tennessee’s John Overton High School and was honored with induction to the Gold Key Society in 1968.
She was inducted into the Tennessee High School Speech & Drama League in 1991 and into the National Forensic League Hall of Fame in 1984.
The students selected to advance from the first tutorial then participate in the Phyllis Flory Barton Tutorial. Octafinalist keys at Emory aren’t the only awards named in Barton’s honor. Her memory has also been preserved at Nationals, as the speaker awards in policy debate are named in her honor. Additionally, the National Debate Coaches Association offers Barton Scholarships to members to allow them to attend summer coaches institutes.
Barton coached some of the most successful debaters of all time, and her students went on to claim championships at Nationals, the TOC, the NCFL, and almost every major national circuit tournament. She was the first person elected to membership in the TOC Coaches Hall of Fame and served as vice president of the National Forensic League. She was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1987 and was a key coach in the Barkley Forum.
Quarterfinals at Emory is known as the Richard B. Sodikow Tutorial, named for the founder of the Bronx High School of Science Speech & Debate Team in New York. Sodikow is a seven-diamond coach in the National Forensic League.
Sodikow coached teams to the final round of the Barkley Forum an unmatched six times; Bronx Science claimed the title three times. He also coached three teams to finals at the Tournament of Champions. One of the earliest advocates of Lincoln-Douglas Debate, he coached the first TOC champion in that event and, to date, the only LD close-out of the TOC in the event’s history. He fought for doing away to assemblies between outrounds at high school tournaments, ending the division between Boys and Girls Extemporaneous Speaking, and encouraging disclosures in rounds.
Among his other honors are membership in the NFL Hall of Fame, the TOC Coaches Hall of Fame, the Barkley Forum Gold Key Society, and the Glenbrooks Blue, Green & Gold Society. He is also the recipient of the NDCA Lifetime Achievement Award and was a member of the NFL Executive Council.
The Sandra Worthington Silvers Tutorial determines the finalists of the Barkley Forum. Silvers was the coach at Calhoun High School in Georgia. Once described by Georgia’s Shorter College as “one of the most recognizable names among academic debate and scholastic theatre enthusiasts,” Silvers advocated a reinforcement of ethical practices in debate.
A coach for forty-two years, Silvers coached policy teams to ten state titles. (They placed second an additional twelve times.) Her teams also won the Emory tournament three times. Her many titles include Coach of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and STAR Teacher. and a Barkley Forum Key Coach by Emory University. She was the first person elected to the Georgia Debate Coaches’ Hall of Fame and was a member of the Barkley Forum Gold Key Society. Calhoun’s annual debate tournament is named in her honor.
The final round of the Barkley Forum is the Thomas Glenn Pelham Exhibition. Pelham was tournament director of the Barkley Forum for High Schools for thirty-one years. After coaching the winning team — Georgia’s Cairo High School — in 1959, Pelham was appointed director of forensics at Emory University itself.
The Barkley Forum notes that “he was the architect who crafted the traditions of the tournament and of the Barkley Forum Organization. His death in April 1987 created a void in national forensics, which simply cannot be filled. In recognition of his striking achievements, the Barkley Forum honored him by naming the policy debate competition, the Pelham Debates.”
Among Pelham’s contributions to the tournament was the introduction of the unique key awards. This symbol of the Barkley Forum is cast from an antique brass key hidden in Georgia before Sherman’s March in 1864. The original key was found and donated to Emory’s debate program by Pelham and his wife, Susan. The honor society that Pelham founded in 1964 would later be renamed the Gold Key Society.
Cedar Rapids Washington High School, coached by Warren Sprouse, claimed the championship in 2004. The Kinkaid School, coached by Eric Emerson, won it in 2005.
LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATE
The thirty-two debaters attempting to claim the Silver Key first debate in the Walter Alan Ulrich Tutorial. Having coached numerous college policy teams to success at the National Debate Tournament, Ulrich found himself both a leading coach and a leading personality in the activity. He was a leader in many associated academic organizations, inluding the Cross Examination Debate Association, the American Forensics Association, and the Speech Communication Association.
Ulrich taught and coached at West Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt, and Northern Iowa. One obituary noted that “Dr. Ulrich was considered to be one of the leading theorists/scholars in the field of argumentation, and one of the more respected debate coaches in the country.” He was also a major advocate of LD debate. Ulrich was tapped for membership in the Barkley Forum Gold Key Society in 1987.
The top speaker at the Tournament of Champions is honored with the Walter Alan Ulrich Award.
Octafinalists participate in the Rhoda Kirchner Radow Tutorial, which is named for the former head coach at Nova High School. She retired from the NFL as a four-diamond coach after a long tenure as one of the most dominant forensics coaches in the nation.
During her twenty-eight year tenure as coach at Nova, she won a number of teaching and coaching awards. Her leadership of the team was so popular, in fact, that students would later recall years where over four hundred students were listed on the waiting list for her single debate class. Her impact on the community was felt for years. Indeed, at one point, a majority of the attorneys in the area were her former students. In total, she coached over two hundred state champions across a variety of events.
The Patricia Bailey Tutorial comes next. It is named for the former head coach at Homewood High School in Alabama.
A key coach of the Barkley Forum and Alabama Speech Teacher of the Year, Bailey was a nationally-dominant coach during her many years at Homewood and has had a great impact on debate practice. In addition to coaching a national champion, she coached over seven state champions during Alabama’s long dominance of the national scene.
She was elected to membership in the NFL Hall of Fame in 1998 and is a two-diamond coach.
The semifinalists at Emory participate in the Marilee Dukes Tutorial. Many have argued that she is the single most successful coach in the history of Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
A former high school and college debater, Dukes coached at Alabama’s Vestavia Hills High School for over twenty years and made the program one of the powerhouses of the 1990s. Her students have claimed the championships and top speaker awards at every major national tournament during her tenure, including Emory, Big Bronx, St. Mark’s, and the Glenbrooks. She has coached debaters to finals at the TOC an unprecedented seven times. They won the title two times and the top speaker award three times. Vestavia is the only school to have two LD national champions.
Dukes retired as a four-diamond coach in the National Forensic League. In addition to being a member of the Gold Key Society, she was also elected to membership in the Glenbrooks Blue, Green & Gold Society, the TOC Coaches Hall of Fame, and the NFL Hall of Fame.
The final round of Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Barkley Forum is the Dale Lauder McCall Exhibition. As the drafter of the original National Forensic League guidelines for the event, and as the producer of an original and highly influential educational video series that helped define the new event, she has rightfully been called the founder of Lincoln-Douglas debate.
McCall was one of the towering figures of the first decade of the event’s history, and her students at Twin Lakes High School and Wellington High School were among the most successful debaters on the young Lincoln-Douglas “national circuit,” claiming titles at the Barkley Forum, Big Bronx, and the TOC. She published some of the earliest articles outlining the theory and practice of the event.
A five-diamond coach, she was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1993.
The Greenhill School’s David Wolfish, coached by Aaron Timmons, won the title in 2004. Celebration High School’s Tara Tedrow, coached by Tim Case, won it in 2005.
