SANTA MONICA, CA - Congratulations to the finalists at this year’s Victory Briefs Tournament at the Archer School for Girls! After breaking to double-octafinals, Mountain View High School’s Stephen Hess and Hockaday School’s A.J. Motgi won the necessary outrounds to guarantee their place as the last two debaters standing. well, i guess ill attempt to answer the questions about strake taking an earlier flight. im not sure if this is the real reason cuz aj is still in but w/e, im going to say it anyways. tfa state rules state that u can’t miss over i think 3 sundays a season due to tournaments or u lose ur qualification to the tfa state tournament. this is why corbin and mahoney had a coin flip at ut finals and numerous other tournaments are only friday/sat.
so yay for debate “blue laws”! yay for only competing on 3 sundays! yay for tfa being too lazy to change it!

The sunday rule panda talked about isn’t a TFA rule. Its a UIL rule. UIL is different group with a different set of rules, and usually the one that school districts concern themselves with when it comes to budgets.

The decision had ryan lawrence and shyaam subramanian (sorry if i totally butchered that spelling) on bottom.
daniel sheehan, adwait parker, and tim case were on top.
it was a very, very close round, and even the rfd’s from the people on top said that they were about 10 seconds away from voting for aj.

That is horribly wrong.
1. TFA has no Sunday rule (as Rene said it is the UIL rule)
2. THe reason Corbin and Mahoney flipped was NOT because of the Sunday rule but because TFA has a rule that says you can’t debate a round that starts after midnight. However, Corbin and Mahoney could have debated at 7am the next morning and it would have been fine (i.e. Dulles has semis and finals on Sunday morning).
3. It isn’t even 3 Sundays; it is 2 Sundays.
Congratz to Byron on his bid and everyone else. Looks like a fun tournament and it sucks I had to miss it. :(

We left early because our school has very strict policies about missing school. We would not have been allowed to go if we were were to miss any school. The flight we were on did not leave until 6:50 and was the last one of the evening. If we would have waited we would have missed school today and would be in trouble. Leaving early didn’t detract from the experience, it was still a great tournament.

On behalf of a team that came all the way from the East Coast (W.T. Woodson), I just wanted to say thanks to Victor and Mike Bietz. Not only was the weather amazing, the tournament and round robin was a lot of fun. The schedule was relaxed enough to be both humane and reasonable, the competition was great, and the judging pool was deep. Not to mention the fact that all the Archer and Brentwood team/parents were really gracious hosts, and the director’s chairs were pretty cool tropies. I hope some more East Coast schools decide to take the trip out to L.A. next January — I mean, seriously, 70 degrees and sunny!
Also, big props to A.J. who was seriously impressive in both rounds I judged her! Her round with Danielle from the Meadows School was far and away the best round I have seen on this topic (and one of the best of the year!) in both skill and engaging the substance of the resolution — wow! It was good to be back out in Cali again!
p.s. Happy Birthday Bietz!

Dear “justwannaknow”,
It seems we have something in common. I would also like to know. I want to know who the hell you are and what sort of psychic, magical, or alien powers that can determine the outcome of rounds. Really, I would like to take you to Vegas and we will bet on the horses together (except I’ll bet on the ones you say will lose).
For one thing, you weren’t there, so you weren’t in out rounds and you don’t know how well anyone was debating this tournament. If you warrant your arguments this well in rounds, then I doubt anyone will be making any (winning) predictions about you in the future. For another, your predictions were in most instances wrong. Out of 8 results, you got five wrong: Homestead VR, Highland Park DW, Bellarmine BH, Strake Jesuit AW, and Lexington JZ all downed..On that level, you clearly have no place calling rounds–if anyone does. But, finally, nobody has a place to call the skills of another debater. Most likely, your predictions were based entirely on reputation, so you should probably stop trying to live your live vicariously through the success of others. It’s astoundingly tasteless, not to mention élitist, to “know” who will win a round. Your post is both.
I just want to know who the fuck you think you are.

Also, major congrats to Byron on a well-deserved bid and excellent showing.

I hope the weather next year is similar to this year, and not last year’s rain and fog. It was nice to actually see the upper school at Brentwood before being told my round was perpetually up the hill.

I don’t get the complaints about predictions. All the time, pundits predict who will win football games, often just for fun. Let’s assume that this isn’t something horrible and offensive.
It shares many of the characteristics of predicting rounds. The predictors weren’t at practices all week, and don’t know who’s in form and who’s not. They are based solely on past performances (although not necessarily only “reputation.” The predictor could have watched the teams/debaters previously, even in direct head-to-head matchups. So, the predictions are educated guesses based on the compartive strengths and weaknesses of the teams/debaters, along with an educated guess about what the round will be like, what the debaters will go for, etc.)
No pundit is claiming clairvoyance, in no way does making predictions about anything mean you have special powers (is the weather guy tasteless and elitist??)
It’s not really a big deal to me either way, but I don’t get the animosity towards the guy.

Yeah VBT was chill. “Hella” props to Hess and Byron. Congrats to the Hockaday, Strake, and lynbrook armies for such a strong showing.
Congrats to Spirtos for not running the elipse K.
btw, strake jesuit DD=intense, especially considering he’s been debating for less than a year.

I wanted to thank Victor and Mike and the Brentwood/Archer families and administration for both the round robin and tournament experiences. This was by and far one of the most enjoyable tournaments I’ve ever been too from the friendly atmosphere and hospitality to the educational rounds and feedback my students received. The consideration shown between the members of our community made our experience very worthwhile. Thank you.

VBT was an excellent tournament.
Our school doesn’t like it when we miss class for debate tournaments.
Congratulations to Patrick for getting another bid.
Jeremy Dudley keeps track of our sunday tournaments.

VBT was a ton of fun. The atmosphere of the tournament was really cool, laid-back, and conducive to meeting new people and just having fun. I also wanted to congratulate some of the people I saw this weekend - obviously Stephen for getting his bid/winning and David Weeks for winning the RR, but also AJ (who I had never seen before) who was really impressive in finals, and Kevin Pratt and Caitlin Halpern, who both gave awesome and really intelligent performances when I judged them. I don’t think Kevin gets to travel much, and it’s too bad - he’s incredibly solid. Also, the Hockaday sophomore team is really intense - expect big things from them over the next couple years. Anyway, I hope everyone had as much fun as I did in LA.

This tournament was amazing in so many ways.
First, the judging was superb and the round were well-administered. This is the first tournament where I can say the strike sheet was almost unnecessary. Though it doesn’t seem like much, I think that’s a huge complement—everyone who judged me had very strong credentials and tried their best to make honest and well-reasoned decisions. I was especially grateful that the ballots encouraged disclosures with critique, so I learned something new in every round. Needless to say, I—along with everyone else I talked to—was impressed.
Second, the people were great. The vbt staff was very helpful. It seemed like they were doing their best to make sure we were having a good time too. Everyone was approachable. Almost everyone was accepting of 80s dance music.
Third, the location is unmatchable. The weather was pristine—the sun was bright, and the temperature was perfectly balanced by the cool breeze. The schools themselves were really nice too: Archer is recognized as a historical landmark and Brentwood is like a hillside European village. But the best part of the location were the local attractions. The tournament hotel was on the Santa Monica pier, and we thankfully had time enough on Friday and Saturday night to explore the area. I’ve never been to a tournament where I liked the area so much. In fact, no other tournament can even hope to compete with Santa Monica in terms of pure swankness. None.
Finally, a few other highlights in no particular order:
-That damned amazing Italian place. Wow.
-For the sweepstakes awards, the top two teams received a director’s chairs with the vbt logo on the seat back. We are now members of the “Hall of Chairs”.
-NOT getting glass snowmen.
- “What is Love?” by Haddaway, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, “La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, “Do You Believe in Life After Love?” by Cher, “Heaven” by DJ Sammy, “Eyes Like Yours” by Shakira, “Hung Up” by Madonna, and “Toxic” by Britney Spears, “Toxic (Armand Van Helden Remix)” by Britney Spears, “The Bad Touch” by the Bloodhound Gang, “Blue” by Eiffel 65, et cetera.
-Decking out in full UT gear when flying through LAX (Hockaday).
-Running the UT logo up the Brentwood flagpole (Strake).
- “Your team is like some sort of ‘debate frat’.”–Petey Gil
-A ton of others that I can’t remember.
Long story short: if you missed this tournament, you missed out.

CONGRATS aj, i thought you did an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G job, considering we couldn’t really hear you from the little room we snuck into. ;) ;)
i really enjoyed vbt; the experience was amazing. most of my judges were really open to answering questions about strategy etc. as a sophomore, i’m trying to reach the “application” stage of knowing and understanding the flow game; a couple of my rfd’s really helped me understand. round five, actually, changed my life :)
thanks so much for running an awesome tourney, with awesome people and awesome competitors.

I’d like to echo all the comments here, although my 3-3 record certainly left something to be desired I was amazed by the quality of judging. Special props go to Kiwi for being hilarious, Navot for getting me anti-Micropolitics theory blocks, Hess for winning the tournament, Manjikian for continuing to pick me up on aff, and MSJ for a great dinner on Saturday night.

im unsure about 8/9 (since i have neither a packet nor a really good memory of speaker awards save a few), but making kevin the 8 and andy the 9 seems more intuitive to me since then i will have judged the 9/24 and the 10/23 flights in doubles (which seems to make sense as a distribution).
