Connecting for College: Class of 2006 Edition

posted by Jon Cruz on December 30th, 2005

Good luck to all those senior debaters on circuits across America who have applied to college and are hearing back from them now. This is an open invitation for all debaters nationwide to share college acceptances, news, and whatnot. (Think of it this way: the sooner you share, after all, the sooner you can make contacts for potential future judging jobs!)

For those who are waiting to hear back or who are still finishing up applications, best of luck from Victory Briefs.

I didn’t see that anyone posted last year that they are were going to American University. I am a freshman there who was a local circut debater in Illinois for four years in high school. American University is home to the highly ranked school of public affairs. I it also big on double majors. I am a double major in Poly Sci and philosophy. If anyone has any questions about the school or wants to visit IM me at HazyFlux13.

I didn’t apply to NYU early, so I don’t know when you hear back, but if anyone has any questions about living on the most exciting and diverse “campus” in the country, feel free to email me at ezahler@nyu.edu or IM me at iqei and I’ll give you my NYU pitch.

In all seriousness, though, I (vaguely) remember this time during senior year kind of sucking (though not quite as much as April), so good luck to all my senior friends out there (especially you pampered San Marino kids with your 4.5s and ridiculously thick CVs… just get into USC already and call it a day) and remember, you’re almost second semester seniors anyway, so none of it matters. =D

I go to Stanford, and it’s really really ridiculously awesome. So if you want to learn more about the school and find out whether or not you want to apply/attend, feel free to email me at clizzin AT stanford DOT edu.

I currently plan to double major in International Relations (interdisciplinary polisci/econ/history) and Symbolic Systems (interdisciplinary cogsci/compsci/psych/philo/linguistics), so I suppose I know a little bit about both sides of the techie/fuzzy spectrum. I unfortunately cannot answer questions about the application process, since I’ve pretty much forgotten everything about it. I CAN, however, tell you all about the academic setup, the dorm life, good places to eat, the absurd abbreviations we use here, and all our various quirky and sexually deviant traditions.

One word of advice though — if you’re into having a consistently superb football team that won’t break your heart and smash it to a pulp with a mallet in the last quarter of close games, you might want to look elsewhere.

Like Chris, I’m a freshman at Stanford (we actually had a class - Introduction to International Relations - together this quarter). I’m probably going to be double-majoring in Political Science and Economics. If anyone has questions about Stanford they can also e-mail me (just use the e-mail it has for my name here). I also don’t remember the application process too well, but like Chris I’d be happy to talk to any prospective students about academics, social life, dorm life, how awesome Late-Night dining is, etc. And if anyone happens to be visiting Stanford (either those who’ve already applied or those who are thinking about applying and want to check it out), contact me if you have a place to stay (though I did kind of get the housing shaft, so I’m in a dorm with some of the smallest rooms on campus).

I just realized how much I overuse parentheticals … wow.

I don’t know if anyone else does this, but at Greenhill we had a Wall of Rejection where everyone pinned up their Rejection/Wait Lists. Most people thought it was depressing, but for the students it was very cathartic to see that most people, high marks or not, don’t get into their top choice(s).

Just as a heads up for those outside California (like me). I looked into Berkeley, and it comes out to close to $40,000 a year for out of staters. As I understand it, you can easily get resident status in California, but until then, I think Berkeley actually isn’t all that cheap.

    Congratulatiosn Bobby!

And Mike- here’s where my research came from:

    http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=26

    For out of state:

    Registration & Fees** $ 7,434
    Housing, food & utilities $12,554
    Books and supplies $1,266
    Personal expenses 1,326
    Transportation $652
    Total $23,232

    **Non-resident tuition & fees add $17,820.

That comes out to about $41,000 a year. Don’t get me wrong- I really like Berkley, but it’s really no cheaper than going to a private school for someone from out of state.

There’s also a big difference between “tuition” and actual cost. Tuition at each of the DC area schools runs around 30k; cost is closer to 40-45k because of external costs and cost of living. This becomes an issue especially with schools in NYC, Bay Area, Los Angeles, DC; not so much an issue at schools like Grinnell ;)

Seriously though - anyone coming to DC to visit a school who needs somewhere to stay (and hotels in NW start at around $179 a night), I do have an off campus accomodation which gives me the space to have guests. Granted, much like the right to work it’s not something I take advantage of often, but shoot me an AIM at PCAZGamer and I could work something out. However, if you’re visiting me, you have to first come up with at least one good Dave McGinnis joke ;)

I “go” to Pitt now (this is ambiguous since I actually teach for more hours than I go to classes), but will be most likely staying here for some time completing a Ph.D. program in History and Philosophy of Science. For any debaters who are applying, I can answer your questions about Pitt and the city.

While Pitt may make sense to you for specific academic reasons (it has many extremely reputable academic programs, as in Philosophy, Writing, Latin American Studies, International Relations, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.), for those concerned with costs, it is a rather inexpensive place to go to college since the city is economically depressed and because Pitt gives exorbitant amounts of scholarships. If you have a 1400 and are in the top 10% of your class, you more than likely will get at least full tuition. Also, because Pitt is a huge research institution, [paid] research and teaching positions are often made available to undergraduates. I’ve garnered close to $11000 in un-taxed research and teaching grants during 4 years here–and this isn’t atypical. Living off campus and eating out is really cheap as well. I currently pay $250 monthly to split a small house (yard, driveway, patio) with my girlfriend in a nice part of town, about a 30 minute walk from campus through a park–which is about 1/2 of what Pitt charges for on campus housing, and I’m sure even less than what CMU charges.

If anyone is interested in visiting any of the Pittsburgh schools (I also have some friends who go to Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne), I can more than likely hook you up with a place to stay. Email me at grm5 AT pitt . edu or IM me at umm nice tumor.

Best of luck to all the seniors,
    Greg

Washington DC is currently experiencing real estate hyperinflation; you’re looking at $900-$1000 for an unfurnished studio in a decent neighborhood…. yeah, but at least it’s not Pittsburgh. ;)

For those of you looking to buy a house (or rent), property values for a 2500 sq ft home average $800,000 and yearly gross property tax is slightly over $9k on that… yeah, not cheap ;)

Also, if you’re thinking of attending another one of the 5 colleges (UMASS, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Amherst) and want an “outside” opinion on what sort of people go there, feel free contact me. Each school has a very distinct personality which is mapable onto a Scooby Doo character (Smith is Velma). It’s really rather fun to live in the Valley.

    Best of luck to all.

Such exciting times; I worked as a tour guide for a large part of two years at Stanford before getting fired for insubordination so this time of year has always been special to me.

I just thought it important to point out that anyone who values/requires regular insincere and baseless flattery from their university administrators should put Stanford near the very top of their list of places to spend four years building a resume likely to appeal to top investment banks and consulting firms. Better yet, because of its prominent international standing and consistently high US News and World Report ranking (#1 in 1997!), it’s fairly easy to eat lunch (and often dinner and aperitifs) for free *** EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR *** because lots of exceedingly important people show up on campus on a daily basis and the student groups who sponsor their visits have food budgets that absolutely defy reason (anyone who tries to rationalize this official policy is, at best, very Republican/gluttonous.) And this FREE food is almost always VERY good. And although many Stanford students will tell you that the regular campus food is terrible, they’re lying, likely because that’s what Stanford students are supposed to say to show that even though they’re otherwise superior mortals, they’re deep down just ordinary, jaded egomaniacs.

I suppose the one obvious downside I’d caution people of is that Stanford is a microcosm of reality in the sense that the Iranian government is sub-optimal but generally reasonable and fair. Anyone looking to remain an active part of the real world should probably go to some place like the University of California at Santa Barbara, where the people are said to be beautiful and sexually promiscuous.

Good luck everyone! This decision as to where to accumulate considerable debt or blow your parents’ money for four years is no small potatoes. If you apply to Stanford and get accepted, you should certainly give it serious consideration since you’ll have justification for assuming you’re better than most people until the day you die.

In all honesty, though, that stuff about Stanford having random free food every day is true. It’s especially ridiculous at the beginning of the year when all the student groups are trying to get people to join them. I plan to forsake purchase of a meal plan next year just to see if I can survive purely off of mooching.

if anyone’s interested in Berkeley (especially from out-of-state), let me know, and I can tell you oodles of good stuff (and I suppose some bad if you want a balanced review).

As far as tuition is concerned, I pay out-of-state, and it’s in the upper 30Ks (which is still mildly cheaper than most private schools). It’s not horribly easy to get resident-status unless you’re financially independent from your parents or they plan to move out to Cali.

I could ramble forever about how amazing this school is, but for now I’ll just emphasize that you won’t find better/cheaper food pretty much anywhere (although rumor has it, Harvard and NYU have access to some great stuff too). You won’t find more hippies willing to trade pot for a Mt. Dew (that actually happened), more shops selling sunglasses for $5, etc., and it all comes with a beautiful campus that you don’t need a bike to get to class on.

And our sports teams are good. Woo.
