Alta (Temporarily) Concludes After Quarters
SANDY, UT - A computer meltdown in the tab room caused the Alta Silver & Black Invitational to become severely delayed, resulting in the temporary conclusion of the tournament after the quarterfinal round. The semifinals and finals of Alta will take place in February at the College Prep School on the night before the Berkeley National Invitational. (Lexy Green deserves a special congratulations for managing to get the tournament up and running again after this unforeseeable technical problem.)

lmao.
this is less legit than the lakeland and monticello tournaments and well - that’s a hell of an accomplishment.
granted though, it makes much more sense to have an accessible mid west quarters tournament than it does to have the particular tournaments ive just mentioned, but whatever.
GOOD LUCK TO MELISSA PATEL!!!!!!

When did Josh Meah become the person to determine whether or not a tournament is legitimate? When did people suddenly get the ability to determine whether a tournament is “legit” or “illegit” when they’re not there and have never been there? When did the criteria for determining whether a tournament is “legit” or “illegit” become how many names someone recognizes?
No offense Josh, but many people on the national circuit don’t recognize your name and you haven’t been competing on the national circuit too long yourself.
Good luck to all the compettitors at Alta.

In response to the dude that effed my name up to be funny:
I made a bad post. You’re right. I apologize.
On a separate note - I’m entitled to my opinion similar to the way you are. If you would really enjoy a criteria for determining legitimacy, then read the posts following the last Alta tournament.
Also, what the hell does my name have to do with anything? The validity of my opinions have nothing to do with my name whatsoever.
The reason I post my name is because I allow my posts to be attached to my credibility. Much unlike yourself, if I type something that makes myself sound like an annoying prick I give people every opportunity to yell at me and persuade me otherwise with knowledge of who they are attempting to criticise.
I put my opinions out there to be discussed or shunned. I give people every opportunity to ring me out to dry with criticism to the fullest.
If you really hate my posting that much, message me on AIM: toyboxconundrum
Without the guts to give me an identity, I reserve the right to consider your anonymous post nugatory. I still believe in my original opinion, granted, it could have been stated much more eloquently, that doesn’t make it wrong. Last I checked, there are people on my own coast and across the country that agree with me, though that doesn’t make me correct, it provides my view a minimal amount of credibility to justify raising the issue.
Stifling criticism is never a positive, though if someone was particularly offended by my post, I apologize (I really do). It could have been said differently.
To *Jesus*:
Don’t ever talk about someone like that. You, whomever you are, are particularly disgusting and I’m sure will never find success in this activity with an attitude like that. Good job posting anonymously, but your lack of intelligence is shown through your post. You are a jerk and should probably quit the activity now.
Most likely, you will find a fantastic career in that which you just related Melissa to, or at least you’ll find a home. I doubt people enjoy your company.
Btw - I doubt you know Melissa. If you did, you’d know she’s a sweetheart and would be cheering for her as well.

Josh–Alta is legit. Don’t delegitimize tournaments that you aren’t at and probably know little about. Former champions of Alta include Hirsh Jain, Justin Hinojoza, Max Stevens, and many more phenominal debaters. Fabien didn’t even get a bid there. Don’t talk shit. You’re inadvertently crapping on lots of good debaters who had a lot more success than you’re having.

Tournament Predictions for Saturday:
1) It will remain cold with a light chance of legitimacy
2) The posts of egotistical fucknuts on .org will continue to poison the possiblity of debate prospering online. http://forum.lddebate.org/viewtopic.php?t=17502
FYI this shit is hilarious. A must see for the whole family.
3) A judge at Alta will be quoted as saying “Sure they were new arguments…but they were great.”
4) Josh Meah will be crowned official “legit tournament” poster and will go on to have an amazing career posting irrelevant crap.

Yeah, quick comment…
I don’t think those that are disputing the integrity of the tournament (with a notable exception being someone Bietz showed) are attacking any winners current, past, or future. I also think that it’s not an attack on the directors of the tournament, the residents of the state of Utah, the atendees, anyone who doesn’t travel national circuit for debate for whatever reason including cost, etc….
I think it’s an underlying joke about how we argue about which tournaments should get bids. I think it may be a joke against those who attack the northeast, but I don’t think anoyone is being serious in their attacks.
If we as a community take ourselves so seriously that we can’t joke about tournaments without people being attacked, then I seriously think there are other underlying issues.

I’m not sure bid discussions are a “joke” that we just engage in for laughter, but I agree with Boyle that it’s definitely not worth the flamefest going on here.

I’m not going to criticize Alta because I’ve never been there, but your argument is a fallacy. Just because great debaters have won the tournament in the past, and other great debaters haven’t bid there doesn’t make the tournament “legit”. The champion of Harvard is a great debater, but it’s the worst bid tournament I’ve been to. Two years ago, a TOC semifinalist didn’t even clear there, much less get a bid. That still doesn’t make it a great tournament. Once again, I’m not going to talk about Alta, but equating who wins/doesn’t win there has nothing to do with the tournament’s “legitimacy”.

Rumor has it that the reason outrounds are delayed 2+ hours is that data from rounds 1 through 5 has been lost and needs to be re-entered manually. Furthermore, there apparently was a judge “mistake” in round 4, skewing round 5 pairings.

Here we are, the 7th Flo’ Crew in order of speaks (H/L only included, but not the lurking variables like opponent wins that influence these rankings):
Jeremy 4-1 (116)
Justin 4-1 (112)
Mostafa 4-1 (112)
Sam 4-1 (108.5)
Greg 3-2 (114)
Ben 3-2 (112)
4-1s are practically guaranteed to break. According to the Schifberg Institute of Mathematics, 9 or 10 3-2s should break.
Posted from: 207.172.150.102
December 10th, 2005 14:06
How are those H/L totals possible…? If there are 5 prelim rounds, H/L includes 3 rounds, meaning a total of 90 possible speaks. Or does Alta do ballots out of 40…?

Greer Feick and Melissa Patel are confirmed 3-2. Kunal Raygor, whom I debated round 4 (pretty sure he picked up), is most likely 4-1, which means that I’m probably 3-2.
The tournament is about four hours late now (breaks were originally supposed to start at 12:30).
Whoever is taking care of the food is the tab room should be commended publicly for their delicious brownies.

Kunal is confirmed 4-1. Which means Melissa is confirmed 3-2. Neal Yuan, Michelle Huynh, and Michael Keaton are 3-2. Amitha Ganthi is either 3-2 or 4-1. All those debaters (besides, obviously, Melissa) are from CPS.

I enjoy the new reporting perspective… Not enough attention is paid to the tab room food. Personally, I think the worst offender of this policy was Princeton (with none) and Yale (with slim to none), while the local Washington/Arlington CFL tournament at Potomac Falls would take first; in terms of the national circuit, I’d say the Bronx tournament followed by the GBN and Wake tournaments would be second and tied for third, respectively.

Jay is right, however… at this point it looks like neither sems nor finals will be happening this weekend. The idea being tossed around is completing the outrounds the day before berkeley on the new topic, at college prep.

I thought something like that might happen- Well Done to all 4 debaters… And MUCH LOVE to Neal for carrying CPS back to deep outrounds at Alta. Good Work!

Moment of sadness in regard to Ben (me) and Greg who both missed by one speak (reppin Bainbridge)
As a side note with regard to legitimacy, i think that late outrounds were ok but on one of greg’s prelims ballot the RFD was the fact that the neg (not greg) debated the value, and on one of mine the judge whined at me for saying my opponent can’t make new arguments in the 2AR.
Whatever those things mean, i felt that the 5 round poorly judged pool didn’t warrant a quarters bid, i go to local tournaments that are more legit then this (in my opinion). Mad congrats to Schiffy, who had a ridiculous quarters round (the first neg VI was that jeremy was a dirty atheist) and Justin. And congrats to our island homies from Mercer who bid in policy (way rad)
Sorry about the seeding mostafa but you’ll get your bid

The tournament was postponed and they’re going to hold Semis and Finals at CPS the Friday before Berkeley, possibly on the new topic. (since quarters ended at 1:00 in the morning) All four parties agreed to the decision.
Semi-final rounds are Carlos (Salpoint) v. Schiffy (S. Eugene) and
Neal (CPS) v. Fang (West High School)
(Thanks for your comments Utah debators)

Congrats to: John and Kunal, too bad last years finalists didn’t get the bids,
and mostafa, i feel you on the pain of being walked over in dubs (i.e. that was me last year.)
too bad utah state law mandates that the tournament end.

Due to the lateness of the hour caused by the complete meltdown of the LD computer, we are running the semis of LD at College Prep on the night before the Berkeley tournament. Semis will be Salpointe CO v. South Eugene JS, and CPS NY v. West AF. This will allow us to have panels of judges who are actually awake! Finals of Policy will also be hosted by CPS at this time. The finalists are CPS BB and Mercer Island SP.
A big thank you to all of the judges (like Jeff Gans and Michelin Massey) who stayed beyond their commitment to help us with octos. And another big thank you to Mike Bietz for helping out with the reconstruction of the tournament (needed because of the most stunning computer disaster I have ever witnessed in a tab room).

“(and the toc scoreboard)”
Keep in mind, please, that the TOC Scoreboard is unofficial, as noted at the top. I haven’t heard back from everyone that we shouldn’t include ghost bids, and since this issue seems to occur year after year with the uncertainty about the bids and the way the rule is phrased in JW’s e-mails, I’ve included them on our unofficial list. If we can get an official clarification that says otherwise, I’ll gladly (and swiftly) adjust accordingly.
To add to my earlier congratulations to Andrew, Carlos, and Angie: congratulations to all of the bid recipients, and a special shout out to Mr. Schifberg on his third bid and to Justin Perry and Max Alderman on their first bids! (Katherine Preston was right when she introduced me to Max last year at Nationals: he’s going places!)
I think Lexy Green deserves a special shout out for bringing the tournament back from what I understand was an unforseeable computer meltdown of epic proportions.
