This is the second year in a row that St Louis Park has had debaters in both final rounds at novice and JV state. Last year they won novice and took 2nd in JV. This year it flipped. Wowza. Good job!!!

Idriss is the man. I think he dropped for failure to say “praise Allah” at the end of his speaches. Also congrats to Dan Jennis, 17th seed, if he had cleared you would have seen his name depp in outrounds. Also did anyone else notice every quarters, semis, and the finals round was decided on a 2-1, just seemed interesting.

I watched the semi’s round between Jon and Heather and I guess I just left and was not satified. Although I probably would have voted Aff as well I don’t think that either debater got substantive RFD. I was particularly mystified by the RFD of one of the judge’s, who’s name I can’t recall, that basically said, “I want to go first because I want to see how my debater did. This was like a bad policy round. I vote Aff.” And then proceeded to leave before the other judge’s gave an RFD. I talked to Jon after the round but he seemed more upset than caring about an RFD. Nobody else probably cares, but I’d like to see a breakdown of that round and why judge’s voted the way they did. I think the panel in finals did a much better job of this.

I heard weird things about the RFD too. If it was a “bad policy round”, then how can a judge pick one debator really easily? I’d be curious to see the RFD too.

i agree that the rfd was confusing in sems, but i think they thought it was too much like policy b/c of speed (even though i didnt think either of us went very fast and they said it was ok if we were clear and the ppl who watched the round that i talked to said it was the clearest “speed” they had heard) and the overview, which in the end i think was the voter based on the “it comes before the standards” and the dropped turn. i think the rfds were incomplete to some extent but i think everyone was in a hurry to leave. thanks to all who congratulated me and congrats to everyone else!

I would agree that the “bad policy round” analysis was not very accurate. I guess I didn’t really hear much of an rfd either, even though I know people were in a hurry to leave. I would have liked maybe a little more of an rfd especially in a round that is probably my last of the year. Don’t by any means take this is me complaining about the round, or even the judging. Congratulations are due to Heather and Idriss (you are still the man)

Mostly I just want to say that that is one of the cutest finalist pictures I’ve ever seen on vb. Also, congrats to both finalists. Heather has been working her ass off all year and completely deserves this.

Um, not sure I’d call the picture cute, I mean it looks like Idriss is tapping Heather affectionately on the head, but it also reminds me of when I patted my hamster a little too hard as kid. I’m sure no violence is being insinuated though…
Congrats to my teamates Gauri and Kristen, who together picked up 2 quarters ballots, which means one of them should have gone on to semis. Congrats to Idriss and Heather for getting to finals and being awesome people.
And John, if its your last tourney of the year, its not a bad way to go out, but try to come to Blake, that way you can push me down to 65th seed.
