Patrick Mahoney Wins the UT Longhorn Classic

posted by Ajay Ketkar on December 3rd, 2005

AUSTIN, TX - Congratulations to Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School’s Patrick Mahoney and Highland Park High School’s Corbin Cass for advancing to finals at the UT Longhorn Classic! As TFA state rules mandate that tournaments conclude by midnight on Saturday–and concessions are permitted to allow this to happen–a coin flip occurred in lieu of the the tournament’s final round. Patrick won the flip, and thus won the 2005 UT title.

Patrick is coached by Jerry Crist, Murvin Auzenne, and Gary Johnson. Corbin is coached by Toby Whisenhunt and Navot Tidhar.

Patrick, mad props kid. Congratulations to Brittany P for being the Austin kid to go the furthest in the tourny. And to her coach, Mr. Colling, i’m still waiting for my five dollars. He bet me and my trips opponent Ben Clancy from Westwood five dollars each to walk from the UTC to our round in PAR holding hands. It got awkward at the end but i’ve got to say that Ben has a mean grip…

Congratulations to everyone who competed at this outstanding tournament. I had a great time helping in the tabroom with Kandi King and Steffany Oravetz. A couple of answers to some questions.

    1) This is a very good tournament - especially for a semis bid - but because of the Sunday rule, the tournament can’t go to a 6th prelim round.

    2) I am very pleased to say that there were panels in all elimination rounds - including triples and doubles.

Jeremy and Dougs quarters round was a 2-1 with Fugit and McMillan on top and Mack Coleman on bottom.

Doug and Patricks semis round was a 2-1 with Haitz and Johnson-Blaylock on top with myself dissenting.

They flipped a quarter( A 1998 if im not mistaken) in finals. Corbin called heads. It was tails.

Andy Werner made all this possible. He didn’t have to concede to me, but he did. I can’t express how grateful I truly am.

On an unrelated note, there were approximately 160 debaters in the field and 4 bids. Showing up, a debater has a 2.5% chance of picking up a bid. Also, the debaters in outrounds cumulatively held more than 20 bids from this year.

Look UT’s competition, size, and prestige. Now compare its bid level (semifinals) to that of other tournaments this wekend.

Make of it what you will.

i’d like to thank coach andy charrier for bringing his kids (lakeville north and south) all the way down to texas for this tournament…

it was great to have such a diverse pool. the albuquerque academy kids and then the montgomery academy debaters and then the lakeville kids. if we added a 6th round this could really be a quarters tournament.

charrier is a great coach, judge, and all-around guy! major congrats on breaking so many and hopefully you come back next year.

Bloodbath tournament nothing short of brutal. Where else could you find the privilege of knocking heads against 155 LD’ers– including 13 who hold TOC bids— for the privilege of a semis bid (random 4 out of 155 or 2.6%).

Other comparisons from the same weekend—-

Ohio Valley? Forty-two total entrants, 6 with TOC bids, semis bid (10% of entrants).

Auburn? Sixty-six made it through the snowstorm, 4 with TOC bids, semis bid (6% of entrants).

Congratulations to the UT survivors— patrick, shane, andy, corbin and doug!!

great job Patrick, awesomely consistent!! enter 5 TOC tournaments all year, break in all five, make it to the TOC bid round 5 consecutive times, win Wake (no fluke 16 of 17 outround ballots) and now UT!!!!

Ok it’s not mangus-like impressive, but still p.d.g.
