The TOC Concludes: Kentucky is Wolfish Country

Hirsh Jain and David Wolfish
The final round panel consisted of Tim Averill, Mike Bietz, Nick Coburn-Palo, Cherian Koshy, and Jenn Larson. On a 5-0 decision, the top seed and the winner of the Walter Alan Ulrich Award for placing as top speaker–David Wolfish–is this year’s TOC champion. He is the first Texan ever to win the tournament. Congratulations!
David is coached by Aaron Timmons and Neil Conrad. Hirsh is coached by Vikrum Aiyer, Andrew Garvin, and Sanjeet Mitra.
Congratulations to both debaters, all who cleared, and all who competed in this year’s Tournament of Champions!

Hahahahahaha, shoutout to Scarola.
But no, nobody has ever won the tournament by coming back from a bubble round. I’m pretty sure nobody’s ever even gotten as far as Hirsh has in a bounceback from the bubble.

Major congrats go out to David. I dont know if there has ever been a Top seed, Top Speaker, First place before. That’s incredible, especially dropping two ballots during the whole tournament. Congrats to Hirsh also, who, needless to say, is pretty awesome.

To the morons who are already crying BS about the final round decision: go to hell. There is no way someone consistently picks up ballots based off their coach or politics.
Wolfish earned his title, I’m not sure what more he has to do to earn your respect.

number 1… congratulations to david wolfish on his win. what an incredible season. also, big ups to AT. you’ve got the l-d ring now! that’s awesome. the rest of us in the b.d.c.a. have an even tougher row to hoe to catch up.
number 2… congratulations to hirsh jain on being in the finals. you also had an amazing season. when you first came to vbi way back in the day as a youngster, who knew that you’d be a toc finalist and one of the nation’s premier debaters? it’ll be great to work with you at vbi this summer.
michelinmassey.
ps: to answer eric, the last time this feat was accomplished was when hetal doshi was top seed, top speaker, and the winner. hetal and dw both only dropped two ballots the entire tournament. incidentally, michael bietz judged her final round too!

I’ve had the privilege to judge all but two of the nineteen debaters who cleared to the break round and outrounds, and I know that all nineteen of the competitors are absolutely among the nation’s finest. Congratulations to all of you!
In a bit of regional pride, I’d like to give a shout out to the four debaters from the Northeast who cleared this year at TOC. For fellow trivia hacks, this is the best showing for our region since at least 1995. You’ll be seeing an even more tremendous amount of national talent coming from the Northeast in the next few years. Particular congratulations are in order for Adwait Parker, who represented the region in semifinals, the first debater from our area to make it there since 1998, and also to Matt Shields for advancing to quarters and Justin Becker and Petey Gil for breaking to octas. Awesome job!
Ultimately, of course, the main focus must fall on Texas and California. David and Hirsh are, to me, among the nicest and hardest-working people I’ve met in this activity, and are incredibly deserving of the honor. While I’ve seen him debate before of the past two seasons, I have somehow never judged David before today, and I was surely not disappointed. Hirsh, as always, blew me away in terms of argumentative skill and strategy. I am so happy for both of you: congratulations on this achievement.

This was my first TOC experience and I have to say, there is truly nothing like it. Congratulations go out on many levels: first, to everyone who simply made it there!
Second, to David and Hirsh-my main goal, going into Glenbrooks and TOC as a sophomore this year was to learn, and I have learned a tremendous amount from watching both excellent debaters hit in the two final rounds.
Third, to the awesome New Yorker’s-Petey, Adwait, Matt, and Justin for representing the NE in outrounds.
Congrats to everyone and thanks for making my first TOC experience a really, really worthwhile one.

not to overshadow the great accomplishment of both debaters, but can some fill in some specifics.
What were the sides in the final round?
What happened in in the Adwait v. Hirsh round? From who voted where in the 3-2 decision it sounds like it was incredibily close; and so I’m curious as to what happened. Could some one explain what went down?

Octas: Bryan Cory vs. Sam Kleiner
Quarters: Hirsh Jain vs. Michael Mangus
Semis: David Wolfish vs. Will Leiter
Finals: David Wolfish vs. Hirsh Jain
Sorry, no Northeast videos this year. Ryan and I have nothing but NE love, obviously - especially given that I’m a New Yorker! - so hopefully next year we’ll have some representation. Congratulations to all those debaters that did so well, especially VBI alumni and soon-to-be VBI staff. Congratulations to Tisha Vaidya for proving that she is unquestionably one of the best debaters in the country.
Everyone who advanced deep in the tournament deserves much praise, but I wanted to single out one of the semifinalists, Will Leiter. Will is an incredible debater and wonderful person, and he is poised to make a run as one of the most successful debaters ever (as least in terms of TOC success from his sophomore year on).
Lastly, I want to publicly congratulate the TOC Champion himself, David Wolfish. David certainly is one of the hardest-working debaters in the activity. He was also absolutely on fire throughout the entire tournament. If you think about every pressure working against David, namely past success and the pressure to meet expectations, it is amazing he was able to rise to the occassion with as much force and consistency as he did this weekend. His performance was truly amazing. Congrats, David - you’ve earned it.

- Scarsdale’s other half (extemp) would like to wish Shields a huge and due congratulations. Let it be duly noted that we hope to see you crossing over for a local tournament or two.
-If extemp tournaments were covered as diligently as VBD covered this past weekend, I’d be an extremely happy person.

After reading Neil Conrad’s congrats for everyone, I think some congratulations should be extended to Neil himself, who has worked with that Greenhill crew throughout the year. To the extent we give coaches credit for the performance of students, props to Neil for having 2 of his break at the big Taco (and some guy named Wolfish win… who is this David Wolfish kid… he seems to be real good).

I would like to offer my sincere, genuine, compendiary, unadorned, breviloquent, hearty, laconic, indubitable, candid, heartfelt, honest-to-goodness, undesigning, authentic, honest, frank, unambiguous congratulations to Matt Shields of Scarsdale, NY 10583. You’ve worked hard, been cool, it was fun working with you, good accomplishment thingy etc etc. Barring jackhammers, I see a first place trophy in your future (and several in your past).
Also congratulations to Adwait, Justin and Petey for blah outrounds blah Northeast fishcakes, and Jon Gordon and Scott Brainard (who learned everything he knows from me this past summer) on blah winning records blah Northeast fishcakes.
Good job everyone!

i want to say two (well, 3) things:
1) i want to thank everyone who made this activity great for me SO MUCH. honestly, for all its problems and drama and infighting, this is the most amazing group of people i’ve ever gotten a chance to be around. i love all of you.
2) congratulations to everyone who qualled to toc, made it to outs, etc.
3) maddddddd props to david wolfish, my ex-roomie and a great debater. his amazing consistency and his ability to get so much out of any argument are skills that i’ve never seen more than 1 other debater in my career match with any level of consistency (though, for the record, i still think eric palmer is the best debater i’ve ever seen :p). there were so many great debaters this year, but no one deserved to win the toc more than david. i wish him all th best at nationals.
the toc is hella proper.

I want to extend my congratulations to David Wolfish for his victory and anyone else that I judged at Emory that competed at the TOC. I only hope that I can judge debaters as great as you all.

Although I don’t know many debaters by name this year I’m sure TOC, as it usually is had some amazing talents and personalities. Congrats to David, whom I have had the pleasure to judge. Though I didn’t see him this year, judging him as a sophomore and junior I could tell he had a fantastic work ethic and talent which was rewarded today as it has been at many other tournaments.
On the other hand, you dropped two ballots man. Ari Simon dropped zero, count ‘em, none. You’re just an also ran! But you dropped fewer ballots than me, so shut my mouth!
Congrats to all.

Good work to everyone who qualled though, that’s amazing in itself!

Congratulations to my future wife, Tisha Vaidya, for being amazingly awesome at debate and life. Congrats to David Wolfish for being HELLA intense- while his winning TOC is amazing, it’s not at all a surprise. Congrats to everyone else who broke, from what I’ve seen and heard, you all rock hardcore. It sounds like the TOC was the biggest and awesomest party ever; I wish I could have been there.

The panel for the quarters round between Will and Bryan lists one judge as Chetan Koshy. No such person exists…yet. (Just wait until November 5.)
Finally, I would like to congratulate the Rawls lab representatives, as well as David on his victory. Thanks to everyone who made this a great TOC.

1. Congrats first and foremost to David Wolfish, who is not an annoying little whiny kid as I once (for about an hour) thought, but rather an extraordinarily hardworking, talented, and kind individual. :)
2. Congrats also to the Northeast (well, NY really) for being a significant portion of the outrounds pool.
3. A huge thank you to VBD for the coverage. It provided a wonderful distraction from all the other things I should have been doing.

obviously VB cant stand up to criticism- that should tell you something about it

Or perhaps your bashing an institution has already been done before and your existence is unnecessary?
If you have qualms about VBI, don’t detract from the accomplishments of others by taking the time to bitch about something you hate. If that’s the case, there are other forums for such distastefulness.

The issue of “censoring” has come up a few times in recent weeks. The policy for deleting posts - restricted, generally, to double posts, lengthy error-correcting posts, and “inappropriate” posts - has been clarified.
There is no “VBI conspiracy,” not even on VBD. There was a misunderstanding about our deletion policy. That has been clarified.
And, to clarify further, I know of no camp, VBI included, that claims to produce champions. (In fact, our rather ubiquitous brochure says that we don’t make that claim explicitly.) We do, however, claim to be a camp which champions (past and future) choose to attend. I don’t see what’s wrong with proud lab leaders giving shout outs, and a proud staff acknowledging its alumni, and the like, particularly when every single camp does this.
In any case, thanks to all who enjoyed our coverage.

I’ll get that fixed, I know where the error is. We’re redesigning VBD entirely to better adapt to non-IE browsers, in any case. :o)

In line with what Naveen said, it’s pretty funny that critical, offensive comments are made on VBD because people can speak under condition of anonymity, whereas Westman reveals the identity of the poster.
So stop being a baby - post your inflammatory comments on Westman so we can engage in this productive dialogue that apparently you’re trying to start…and tell us who you are, because if your comments are so insightful, I’m wondering why your name is “proof” and your email address is “john@doe.com”
An even more important reason that these comments should be made elsewhere is that this thread is in place to congratulate TOC debaters - not for you to bash the camps they went to.
So…like…shut up.

May 3rd, 2005 19:10
I really appreciate everyone’s comments and congratulations. I just wanted to say a few things to a few people about the TOC now that I almost done competitively.
Coaching Staff:
You were all amazing this weekend. You put up with me being stressed out all weekend. Specifically:
Aaron Timmons-This is the best coach in the game. He knows every aspect of the activity and my successes are really just natural consequences of following his advice.
Tisha Vaidya-you’ve been with me for three years doing practice rounds and cutting cards. I’m glad I spent these years with you.
Neil Conrad-I wish you had been older so you could have gotten in the game earlier. If I could only have you for a year, I’m glad it was this one. If only you could keep up with me on the court…
Katherine Thompson-you can beat anyone next year. I have faith that you can tear up the circuit next year if you set your mind to it and work hard.
Dr. Robinson-if Neil got in the game late, then you came in for the last play. That said, you were clutch. You are ridiculously smart and one of the nicest people I know in the activity.
Duby-you had no reason to keep doing practice rounds with me when you were gaining very little, but I was learning everything. You set the highest standards for me and challenged me to be my best.
Eric-I came into the activity with goals of breaking your records. Slowly, I released this mindset as we became better friends. What struck me was that everytime I met a judge that had judged you years ago, their comments were all the same: you were just smarter than everyone else. I felt a surge of pride everytime someone told me I debated like you did.
My lab leaders throughout the years have been phenomenal. I had Bietz more years than any other lab leader so I’d just like to give him a shout out for being a great lab leader.
Friends (you know who you are. Just because I didn’t have anything specific to recall doesn’t mean you’re not my friend):
Leiter-you are the smartest and most naturally talented debater I know
Hirsh-you clowned me in CX. What does physiologcal mean?
Mihir-best lab partner ever.
Sheehan, Alex, and Max-thanks for sharing rooms with me. You all taught me a lot.
Liz-thanks for coining the term “the machine.”
Skanky-your boyish charms are unstoppable.
My best advice to anyone entering the activity is to work hard and try not to make bad first impressions. I’ll tell one of my most embarassing stories:
It was Nationals my soph year and I knew my cases were good and I had a shot to do well. I had come off of a great tournament at Woodward and was feeling over-confident. So much so, that I told Nick green, one of the great Edina debaters, that I would, “end his career.” I never got a shot at him because I lost a round earlier than he did, but I felt embarassed all summer at SNFI in Bietz’s lab that summer. Be careful what you say, not because of who you are saying it to, but because you should be nice to people.
I always remembered how embarassed I felt after realziing how uncalled for my actions were.
Now I’m just kind of ranting so I’ll stop and get some much needed sleep. Congrats to everyone at TOC and peace.
David Wolfish

Congratulations to Mr. Wolfish on his well deserved victory. You’ve made texas proud.
It’s good to see that Houston had such a strong showing.
I remember laughing last year when I heard bryan cory was the top seed at TFA state. Then i judged him and felt stupid. You’re a badass sir and you should win nats just for good measure.
I also remember laughing when Jeremy used to run cases with 15 observations. It was great seeing you do so well this year. Next year should be even better.

Congratulations to Hirsh and David. David has left me in awe several times when I’ve judged him due to his beautiful flow strategy. It is truly an art to watch. He certainly deserves to be the first Texan to win the TOC.
Also congrats to Bryan Cory, Adwait Parker, and Matt Shields for the intellectualism they bring to the activity. I’ve judged Adwait more than any other student this year and feel like I’ve learned something each time.
Finally, congrats to the other Texans who cleared to the bubble rounds, Matt Kinskey and Jeremy Dudley, and everyone else who competed this past weekend. I saw several impressive debates and debaters, including several who didn’t clear. This has been an enjoyable year to watch debate.
