Fitch’s Pitch: Pat on Debate

Posted by Jon Cruz in the Interviews category

Pat Fitch
Not long ago, Pat Fitch was often billed as one of the “fastest rising coaches in America.” Given his active involvement in high school debate throughout his four years of college and his desire to remain active in the community as a coach now that he is a college graduate, the label still seems quite appropriate. Fitch joins us today to discuss his views on debate and share some advice for college students–present and future–who are interested in coaching and assisting, and, just as importantly, to the students like him out there who started debating later in their high school careers. Find his perspective on these matters and more in this exclusive VBD interview.

React…to Murray Bookchin

Posted by Andy Charrier in the React category

Writing from Minnesota, Andy Charrier put it bluntly last week: “We are all better off with the open sharing of ideas. The more knowledge we pour into the debate community, the better all of our debates ought to be.” In that spirit, he invites you, the reader–debaters and coaches–to try a little experiment for the summer. Each Monday, Andy will post an column with a link to a debate-related philosophy article. He will highlight three areas of the article that he found interesting, but not include any commentary about what these areas mean. That’s your job! Given the diversity of thought within our community, this ought to be fun and educational. Simply put, he is asking you to read the article, and then, well, react. This week, we’ll try an article by Murray Bookchin.
