Antoinette Fuoto and Scott Brainard
NYSFL state finalists Antoinette Fuoto and Scott Brainard
The annual state championship tournament of the New York State Forensic League has come to a close at the Shenendehowa Central School complex in Clifton Park. After two days of competition in the varsity field, two debaters remained standing: Scott Brainard of Niskayuna and Antoinette Fuoto of Monticello. On a 5-0 decision, Scott defeated Annie to claim the state title. Congratulations to both!
Scott is coached by Annemarie Rizzo and Loralynne Krobetzky. Annie is coached by Rose Joyce-Turner.
Congratulations are also in order for the finalists in the junior varsity and novice categories! In J.V. (”intermediate”), Pat Fallon of Regis defeated Claire Bulger of Stuyvesant on a 4-1 decision. In the novice division, Sylvia Abdullah of Stuyvesant defeated Joanna Schlingbaum of Half Hollow Hills East, also on a 4-1 decision.
Sylvia and Claire are coached by Julie Sheinman. Pat is coached by Eric DiMichele. Joanna is coached by Linda Martucci.
Full results for J.V. and novice are forthcoming. Congratulations to all!

DUDE someone’s last name is Blenkinsopp! That excites me because Tuppence takes the moniker of Mrs. Blenkensop when going undercover in Agatha Christie’s novel “N or M?”
Actually, come to think of it, the name Hoyzaionova is much cooler.
Anyways.
Congrats to Scott and Annie!

Does this tournament not use brackets in elims? Some of these seed matchups don’t seem possible

Ask DiMichele about that.

no its just that the big thirtytwo is run like a round five with pairings and not like an outround. The system makes just about as much sense as a lot of the judge’s decisions did.

anything modeled after turn-of-the-century Villiger should be strongly reconsidered on that basis alone.
Even if the round 5/Big 32 doesn’t parallel a doubles round…why would the octos seedings be so out of whack?
Posted from: 24.190.160.100
April 17th, 2005 16:18
No, Round 5 doesn’t follow the same parings as out rounds. It’s a power protect in brackets, with school and opponent constraints. It would be the same as runnung a fifth round with everyone still in.
Posted from: 143.229.132.226
April 17th, 2005 17:12
I followed the seedings available from the results packet, which were pre-Big 32 seedings. I assume seeds were reset after that, but we weren’t given the new list of seeds.

Congrats to Melanie who consistently DOMINATES novice LD and I’m sure will continue to do so next year! Sarah, Michael, and Marina *props* for qualifying and legitimizing my 1st VBD post.
The Berkeley Carroll novices are absolutely amazing! Congratulations to Peter Damrosch and the rest of their novice team!

Congrats to Hannah for breaking to Octas! You’ve “affirmed” my faith in the activity for rewarding good debaters ;)
Congrats to the Bronx novices + Mikael for a job well done. Watch out for Melanie Plaza next year. She already is, and will continue to be amazing.
I agree w/ Hannah- after having observed Peter Damrosch in-round, I can say w/ confidence that he’ll be the competition to beat. Congrats.

yea melanie definitly deserved to get a lot farther, i would of loved to hit her in late out rounds as i think it woulda been a great round, haha and of course any credit that BC novices get is due in large part to jacob, and of course cruz is jacob’s coach, and now that cruz coaches bronx sci well lets just say, you can trace every novice debate sucess back to jon if u go far enough lol, and ting ting that pink blouse like dazzled me in round i was like so blinded lol, anyways great tournement, congrates joana on making it to the finals

With all the novice debate talk, I fell the need to comment. When I heard who broke, I thought the final round should have been Melanie and Peter. I have faced Melanie before and she was impressive then, and I can only assume she got better. Peter consistently gets great reviews, so I was pretty much going on that. Anyway, the novice field was running rampid with injustices. Three stick out in my mind. The first is Nicole Kata. She has been incredible throughout the entire year and I thought she was in the top 5 of the field. She ended up going 1-3, which I am sure was not justified. Second was the outrounds. As I said, Melanie and Peter should ahve gone farther than they did and from what I hear, that is more than justified. Lastly, Shrenil Bhansali. 33rd place, 2-2. This is perhaps the biggest injustice of them all. Now in my mind, and this may jsut be a bias opinion, he was the number 1 novice at States. I talked to him and he has affirmed my original feeling that he deserved to be at least 3-1. He is state champion in my eyes no matter what. So, to wrap this thing up. Novice semis should have been as such.
(1) Shrenil def. (4) Nicole
(3)Melanie def. (2) Peter
Finals: (1) Shrenil def. (3) Melanie

“i have a feeling i’ve judged you before?”
sort of, you judged my octas round at Lakeland that my opponent conceded before her 2NR… I remember you as the only judge who actually wrote something on the ballot instead of ‘concession’
Shrenil, you definitely deserved to break at the very least. I’m not going to say that the people who did well at this tournament didn’t deserve to b/c they certainly did, but you definitely should have broken at the bare minimum. Sorry bout the tournament not working out well for you, there’ll be others for you to win. Still need to hit you sometime eh?

My octos round was a 201, with Colonna on bottom.
Craig Gilbert says: “With all the novice debate talk, I fell the need to comment. When I heard who broke, I thought the final round should have been Melanie and Peter.” and goes on to speculate who SHOULD have been in finals.
-Craig, while I understand you are trying to compliment extremely deserving debaters who should have done better, it’s not right and offensive to say that those people deserved to be in finals over the debaters who were in finals. I know for a fact that you did not EVER see the novice from my team in finals debate. So, you are totally lacking any basis for comparison. So, while I don’t mind you talking about people who are talented debaters, please avoid speculating who SHOULD have been in finals without ever seeing the all of the finalists debate or even being at the tournament.

I don’t mean it like that. As I said, it is a probably a biased opinion. In fact, it isn’t probably bias, it is. The whole who SHOULD be in semis should not be taken too seriously, but I think that they should have done better than they did. Mainly because I have hear about how each of them went out and recognized that it was unfair. Whether or not they would ahve gone to semis and then finals, I have no idea, but they shouldn’t have gone out the way they did. Shrenil especially. Poor guy, we all feel for him i am sure.

If my post that followed Craig’s earliers made anyone feel the same way, I didn’t mean it like that and I tried to phrase it in such a way that it woudln’t seem like that either. Like I said before I’m not saying the people who did well at this tournament shouldn’t have cuz there certainly did, merely that, in my opinion at least, Shrenil should have broken and for whatever would have happened to have happened.

I don’t understand how Chaminade RD and Poly Prep DN hit each other in Big 32, and both then managed to break to octos…

dl, the big 32 is not an elimination round. After the fourth prelim round, the top 32 competitiors remain in for another prelimination round, power-paired. Then, AFTER the big 32 debaters are re-seeded and elimination rounds begin. So, those two debaters were both still in the top 16 after re-seeding.

April 18th, 2005 17:08
yea josh thats fair to call craig on that, but i would like to make a comparaison since i’ve hit both joana and melanie on this resolution, and both rounds were very close. personally i believe that both are excellent debaters, and that both were definitly amoung the top 4 novices i had hit this year. i believe though that melanie is a great debater, and rivals joana in ability, i did not know of the stuy novice who won states, but i can say that a round between melanie and joana in finals would have been a very engaging round, and that i believe melanie deserved that shot at finals against joana (this is with no knowledge of the stuy debater who i am sure deserved to win as well)

Speaker awards aren’t given out in LD at states, but I THINK that Joanna Schlingbaum for Hills East was top novice speaker from a quick glance at the results, although I could be wrong.

A major congratulations as well to Sylvia and Joanna, the novice finalists. I judged both in earlier rounds and was very impressed.
I admittedly missed the results of J.V. finals. What were they?
I’ll have results for novice and J.V. up shortly, though we’ll probably need some help filling in a few gaps in terms of specific decisions. (I have all the names, though!)
