ST. PAUL, MN - The first annual Midwest Warmup - an event hosted by Minnesota’s Highland Park Debate Team - concluded this evening with a final round that included Michael Mangus of the St. James School and Ernie Rose of Des Moines North High School. The round was adjudicated by Anthony Berryhill, Rick Brundage, Elena Kamenetsky, Adam Torson, and the combined vote of the remaining students. On a 4-1 decision–Torson sat out–Michael won the round, and thus won the tournament. Congratulations to both debaters!

The rather creative photo montage is courtesy of Casey Trombley-Shapiro.

Thanks so much to Dave for hosting this, it was super ultra nice of him and was definitely one of the most fun tournaments I have gone to all year. I feel oh so “warmed up” for TOC!

    Jacob Gelfand writes
    distressing haiku poems.
    Five, seven, five. Yikes!

So, in summary, a kid from Alabama won the Midwest Warmup?

    Cool

yeah, its so weird how tournaments are named after the location that they’re held at instead of the hometown of the person who wins them…

Not that they should change the name, but if it’s called the Midwest Warmup perhaps it’s for schools in the Midwest that’s all. I wasn’t saying it was bad either.

thats in the same way that only people from GBN or GBS compete at the Glenbrooks, right?

    what? no

look at the montage, even that says “magnificent midwest machines” so i assumed that the tournament was for debaters who live in the midwest.
