Will Leiter Wins the Iowa Round Robin
It was an East/West showdown in the Heartland of America: Berkeley champion Will Leiter of Monte Vista faced off against Harvard champion Matt Shields of Scarsdale in the final round of the Iowa Round Robin. On a 4-1 decision, Will defeated Matt to claim this year’s title. Congratulations to both!
Will is coached by David Matley, Larry McGrath, and Ryan Lawrence. Matt is coached by Joe Vaughan.

Congrats to Will on the championship (and on being a super person and the fashion guru of the weekend)
He really capitalized on some of the ambiguity/issues left after the 1AR and gave a great NR.
I was wondering if any of the panel who might check this site could post decision analysis, that would be great. I appologize that we had to jet (we made our plane with 8 minutes to spare….yikes) and not stay for an oral critique but I value the opinions of the members of the panel (poker, koshy, woodhouse, bell and lantz) and would love to hear their thoughts on the round.
Great job to everyone. I was glad to see some new great people debate whom i have never judged before (vorha from hockaday stands out in my mind).
Finally, thanks to mr. bellus and the iowa crew for providing lots of fun, a great atmosphere and some of the most amazing hardware i have every seen.

Phew…it took me a full day to recover from that trip. When Paul told me he bought the larger version of the eagle, I had no idea. I carried that damn thing into the debate room and it was easily 30-35 pounds. Will, you should lift with it. I think it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if you had to fly with it!
Thanks to Paul, Ms. Kathie, Ms. Virginia, and TVo for a great job (as always) hosting this great event. It’s one of the few I hate to ever miss. It’s a great homage to our friend Paul Slappey.
Joe, I have to admit I wasn’t flowing (as usual) and I barely remember the line-by-line now so don’t judge me too harshly for this limited critique. I think the round was really great and demonstrated a lot of skills very well. It’s too bad that some teams decided to leave early because I think they could have certainly benefited from watching the round. Here’s what I remember:
1.) The distinction between religious logic and secular logic
The way I understood Will’s argument was to mean that each system of thought is self-referential. I think Matt’s answer off the second half of the 1NC, while a good one, assumes that secularism is one system of thought while Will is arguing that within secular logic a variety of systems of thought exist and within theology, various forms of religious argument appear in addition to, for example, Christianity is Catholicism v. Lutheranism and within Catholicism, there are orthodox and non-orthodox veins. This seems to validate Will’s point that there isn’t a true distinction between religious and secular modes of thinking. The fact that the distinction between the two isn’t as clearly outlined colors many of the other arguments in the round. While I think Matt has much better ground here to argue from (e.g. religious logic is a matter of personal revelation while secular logic is matter of empiricism and observable phenomena is probably a better grounding mechanism when talking about improving observable and empirical institutions), I don’t think the allegiances answer is doing that much for him nor is the strange advocacy shift that Will points out.
2.) Competing double binds
Will’s answer to the bottom of the 1AC is that a different double bind exists. The 1AC double bind is (for those who didn’t see) that by conflating church and state, dominating religious influences in the law (because of the framework gets conceded the merger of the two happens only during legislation) create either an expectation to conform to law that diminishes agency (Matt’s standard) or to attempt to change the law and be punished. The Foucault impact creates what Matt terms “ethnic cleansing.” It may behoove him to explain it as “religious cleansing” instead. Will’s NR answer is that strictly separating creates a different double bind. Either citizens are explicitly disenfranchised because their religious notions can never be made into law (I’m modifying the argument assuming the 2NR concession on the framework), which undermines his standard of equality and Matt’s of agency. Alternatively, citizens mask their religious logic in secular terms, which Will is arguing rejects agency. Matt’s 1AR and 2AR answers seem to suggest that he’s cool with masking but doesn’t answer or outweigh the agency infringement, which would seem to cut against his ability to win his standard.
These two issues played the most important part in my decision. I think Will’s winning the distinction and that his double bind is worse. Matt’s 2AR makes me consider some other issues that I dismiss for a couple of reasons.
1.) A priori voting consideration
Matt’s 1AR answer off the top of the NC isn’t labeled as a priori (which we shouldn’t label things as anyway because I don’t think it’s possible to know anything in debate independently of experience). The 2AR extension labels it as such, which could be ok but I think it’s pretty clear that Will’s position has an impact and is relevant. Clearly, if there isn’t a distinction between secularism and theology, strict separation would exclude people unequally and arbitrarily, which would be undemocratic. Based on the 2NR merger of the standards discussion, it should cut back agency as well. Certainly, Will should have been specific in his answer but I feel confident not pulling the trigger on that one. I know Andy agreed with me on that particular issue but I can’t speak for Todd or the Wood.
2.) Impact wash
I *think* Matt’s second voting issue (it might have been the third) in the 2AR was that the religious and the secular are both going to be screwed but suggests that the secular get screwed more. I’m not sure I understand why. Will points out in his answer to the bottom of the AC in his 2NR—maybe this is the #3 or #4?—that this is circumstantial e.g. if no one disagrees, there’s no impact and there’s no way to know the extent of this impact. His guarantee versus potential analysis is what makes me vote for him on this issue.
Undoubtedly, I could probably answer questions about other particular arguments but by now, there would be very little chance that I would be able to remember the flow of the arguments or whether something was dropped. I’m sorry I can’t be more comprehensive in my answer but I hope that helps a little bit for TOC prep.
Generally, for everyone who saw the round, I think the cross was very demonstrative of how to strategically approach the round. Will’s cross clearly articulated his concern about the position while Matt’s cross clearly defined how he was going to attack Will. I personally preferred Will’s stylistic choice in the last rebuttal to lay out specifically and lexically how I should consider the issues in the round. Great job by both in the round, though, and good luck at the TOC.

Cherian,
That was extraordinarily helpful and astoundingly specific for not having flowed. I understand where you went with your decision, especially on how some of the round’s ambiguities fed into Will’s position.
Thanks!
Joe
