Best of Luck to Seniors Awaiting the News
posted by Jon Cruz on April 4th, 2005
Good luck to all those senior debaters on circuits across America who have applied to college and are hearing back from them now. This is an open invitation for all debaters nationwide to share college acceptances, news, and whatnot. (The sooner you share, after all, the sooner you can make contacts for potential future judging jobs! Feel free to share “old” news about college from the early decision period as well.)
For those who are waiting to hear back or who are still making their decisions, best of luck from Victory Briefs.
For those who will be attending school in New York, in particular, be sure to contact me if you’d be interested in the occasional judging job at Bronx Science!

Last year I remember reading a similar thread and feeling left out after being rejected by the Air Force and Naval Academies. This weekend I was offered appointments/accepted to both academies and I have decided to attend the Air Force Academy this summer.
To anyone that finds herself in a situation similar to the one I was in last year, great things will come to hardworkers (cliche, but oh so true.)

since a lot of people seem to be mentioning looking for coaching spots…If you don’t find a circuit team where you’re headed you could always attempt to build it yourself… I didn’t find a team near UF so along with another former HS debater I started a program at a nearby private school (less red tape than starting at a public school)… you’d have a hard time NOT finding a school willing to give you a chance just as long as you don’t pitch it as an initially paid position
eventhough we started up too late to get them competing this year we’ve already been ok-d to travel the team next year with out any real negotiating required…

if anyone in the metropolitan area (philly vicinity/nj/nyc vicinity) is looking for an occasional judge/weekend coach, please email me or chantelle pires [nyu stern ‘09] to see if we’re available (we’re really good at fashion advising, too).

I’m going to Stanford, and I will shamelessly do anything I can to pay for it. I will scrub your floors for below-minimum wage. I will teach your sister calculus. I will feed your hamster. I will evangelize for your religion. I guess I could judge and coach debate too.

To all of you U Chicago kids- the UDL in the Chicago area is starting up a 3-person LD pilot program (yes, that’s right, three people per team). Right now, it only involves two schools, but there’s been a lot of interest, and it’s looking like it might continue into next year. If you have any time at all, the UDL can always use volunteers as coaches and judges, and there may even be some paid positions. While the circuit is completely sweet, I personally will vouch for this being an incredibly good cause to undertake next year.

If anyone plans on going to law school, I’m very familiar with the application/admissions process and don’t mind discussing about it. I also have a great deal of experience with collegiate mock trial, which is a great event for HS debaters to spin off into. I’ll be attending the Washington College of Law at American University this August on scholarship. AIM me at MysteryStillness to chat. Congrats to all the seniors going to college and finishing their debate careers!

I am also happy to talk to anyone about applying to or surviving law school in general. I graduated Harvard Law School in 2004. Also, I finished GW in 2001, so while my knowledge is a little dated, I’m happy to talk to anyone going to G-dubs in the fall. Finally, I will be returning to the D.C. area starting in the fall and would like to back involved in coaching/judging. So, if you have questions, or just want to talk to someone about any of those things, you can email me at the address above or IM me at Anjan1979. Congratulations to you all!
