Adwait Parker, Norman Yao Win Vassar

HVC finalists Norman Yao and Adwait Parker
Congratulations to Schreiber’s Adwait Parker and Ridge’s Norman Yao for advancing to the final round of the 2005 Hudson Valley Challenge. In order to prevent the “challenge” of debating a late round in an impending snowfall, Adwait and Norman were declared co-champions.
Adwait is coached by Jake Gelfand. Norman is coached by Dave Yastremski, Laurie Johnson, and Dario Camara.
In a similar situation, the J.V. division was closed out by two most talented debaters as well: Peter Damrosch of Berkeley Carroll and William Lee of Hunter. Congratulations to both!
Peter is coached by Jim Shapiro. William is coached by Noel Selegzi.

I have a question. Why is Norman Yao so hot?

The Vassar tournament was by far the most enjoyable of the season. My prelim judging draw consisted of Peter Petraro, Jake Gelfand, John Mcneil, Jed Glickstein and Matt Scarola - in octas the panel was Cruz, Scarola and Ginsburg…

The food was great too, and Poughkeepsie was…fun
Special thanks to Jon Cruz for working exceptionally hard to subvert the efforts of the parli debaters

Congrats to Adwait and Norman, Jon Cruz for getting locked out of the tab room by the parli team, Tim Hogan for getting lost in Times Square, the Lexington team for letting me crash on my floor, Aram for sucking at subjective guess who, Jacob Levi for eating all the cranberries, Rahul for not breaking off our engagement, Chetan Hertzig for shutting the front door, Matt Scarola for being lame, and everyone else.

A few “thank you”s are in order…
Thanks to Jon for putting up with and eventually taking down the people who locked him out of the tab room (one of several fascinating decisions they made over the weekend). Notwithstanding their sketchiness, this tournament was definitely fun and different.
Thanks to Norman Yao for neither talking about skinning squirrels nor actually doing so when I judged him. I welcome change.
Thanks to Rahul D’Sa for embracing the concept of new in the 2. I’ve been waiting for that to happen for ages!
Thanks to Matt Scarola for stealing the covers. Don’t deny it.
Thanks to Adwait Parker for at least talking about gifts, even if he didn’t give me any.
Thanks to Kate Hoffmire and Justin LeClair for accompanying me in my quest for Chinese food, even if the tofu was laced with cocaine.
Thanks to Micki Chernick for performatively meeting the standard, or at least thinking about doing so.
Finally, thanks to Shoshana Gordon-Ginsburg for getting out of the car.

wasn’t JV a semis close out with 3 hunter debaters and 1 from berkeley carroll?

March 7th, 2005 17:11
To Harris:
:P You and your stupid polar bear…but really, he wasn’t that fast…what was the problem?
And yes, JV Semifinals were a closeout because apparently, no one felt like debating…

priya- he cut an entire contention after going up against me. imagine how much faster he was with it ;)

In my quarterfinals round, however, speed was never an issue. I needed no help in losing…I ended up screwing myself by contradicting my value criterion…shameful, really.
And you know Harris, if I had known speed was a problem for you, I would have gone MUCH faster ^_^

lol priya and i have a question, wat was w/ that glare u gave me from accross the room after i was 1st seed and challenged u 2nd seed? were u that pissed lol
Posted from: 65.73.6.205
March 8th, 2005 02:38
The glare was for so blatantly addressing every single one of my past opponents in the main auditorium, where I could plainly see you. It seemed arrogant…it WAS arrogant. I had figured out much earlier that you would challenge me…no surprise there…
I going to States…so is second seed, my octas opponent, last time I checked…

haha. i heard that someone wouldnt decide because hey both sucked. that true?

Looking at the judging pool, and the decisions, I’m noticing that a lot of the decisions were 3-0’s. This is interesting, because it’s a testament to the quality of judging. As the gap between the majority and minority rises (i.e. as the majority grows larger), the probability of a wise decision rises exponentially, speaking just in terms of probability (Dahl 1989). Of course, one could say that a lot of panels full of f/lay judges can unanimously decide unwisely, but this attributes too much predictability to those judges; I think we can all agree that their decisions are more arbitrary.
So it is quite clear that the judging pool is quite awesome.

All the Quarters rounds in JV were 3-0 except for the Arlington JC/Hunter LB round. In semis, Berkeley Carroll PD was paired with Hunter LB, but they declined the round, so it stopped at semis.

March 13th, 2005 14:43
yea there was a round which was 2-0, was it jed glictstien? anyways wait yea it was adwait’s coach cause i was talking to him and he said neither side one any offense or the standard so there was really no winner, and yea me and LiMing (hunter) didn’t want a semi’s round, and the other 2 hunter ppl were gonna have to coach one of them over so it was just closed out
