Michael Mangus Wins Vestavia

Congratulations to Michael Mangus of St. James and Caroline Yachan of Lake Mary, who met in the final round of the 2005 Vestavia Hills Over the Mountain Classic. In front of a panel that included Spence Patton, James W. Rye III, and Jim Miller, Michael defeated Caroline to claim the tournament title.
Michael is coached by Michele Coody. Caroline is coached by Erin Woods.
For number crunchers out there, with the bids awarded at Vestavia, 62 students have earned two or more bids (or one bid and a “ghost bid”) to the TOC. In this, the final qualifying tournament of the season, all four semifinalists - Battle Ground Academy’s Peter Sturdivant and Harker’s Alex Hsu, as well as Michael and Caroline - earned their second bid to the Tournament of Champions, thus completing their qualifications. (A ghost bid was also awarded to Chris North of St. James.) Congratulations to all!

ps thanks to everyone for the props, and to give props of my own:
way to go caroline for qualling!! and peter!! and alex!! good luck to aram, jon and jeremy with the at large. congrats to chris north for bidding. caroline is particularly intense because she debated jeremy, gordon and (least importantly) me in prelims, making her draw the least lucky thing ever (except those parts where she hit me).
im rambling now because im really tired
i love everybody
ps its peggy herren, not lindsey who picked me up in semis.
pps im really tired

Cruzer in terms of your bid count of 61
I’m pretty sure Logan is not going to TOC because of State and that my sister is going out on top like John Elway and skipping TOC. So that’s 3 off the list (Joshi/Hinojoza/J.Duby) Additionally I’m pretty sure that Hess and Mencher each have 1 bid and non-counted “ghost bid” but maybe the verdict has since changed on that so I count 56 Spots taken in Lexington meaning if they shoot for 70 at least 14 open ones which would make the At-larges roughly 20% of the total pool at TOC. So I guess the bottom line is if you have one bid and want to be in Lexington this May it’s probably worth the $75 Gamble even if you don’t think your odds are that good

Congratulations to everyone who qualled here, and those who got bids, especially my Iowa buddy Chris. Also, to add on to Duby’s post, I believe Bellarmine’s Chris Lin is also skipping TOC to do States, so that’s another one to subtract from the fully qualled list.

My quarters was a 3-0, and semis was a 2-1 with Rye representing the voice of justice. The finals panel was Miller, Rye, and Patton. I think.

Also, could those who cleared drop me an IM (Lapti Nek) or an e-mail (jon@victorybriefs.com) as soon as possible? Thanks!

Two of those semifinalists are attending the Midwest Warmup. We still have a couple of spots open — if you’re attending the TOC, and you want a chance to get some preparation rounds in, let me know!

this is clearly not true. aside from being way better than she would ever admit to herself or others, chrissy was the only person i lost to at vestavia.
