2004 in Review: The Season’s Midway Point

posted by Jon Cruz on December 30th, 2004

With the year 2005 just over a day away, we find ourselves at the midway point of the season.

Three of the nation’s largest and most prestigious tournaments have already occurred: the Greenhill Fall Classic (closed out by California’s Hirsh Jain and Fabien Thayamballi), the St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational (won by New York’s Adwait Parker), and the Glenbrooks (won by Texas’s David Wolfish). The remaining three tournaments - Emory’s Barkley Forum, the Harvard National Invitational, and the Berkeley National Invitational - occur within the next two months. For trivia buffs, this season marks the fiftieth annual Barkley Forum.

Nationals is six months away, but Minnesota recently qualified the nation’s first students to the annual tournament: Apple Valley’s Jeff Long and Eastview’s James Hohmann. In the coming weeks and months, districts across America will determine who will vie for the national championship in Philadelphia.

On the TOC Scoreboard, Iowa’s Ernie Rose is the nation’s current bid leader with seven bids to the Tournament of Champions. New York’s Adwait Parker is second, with five bids. Minnesota’s Katie Poulos and New York’s Matt Shields are America’s junior bid leaders, with four “legs” to their name; Pam Brown of Florida is currently the only sophomore in the nation who has qualified to TOC.

VBD would like to take a moment to congratulate all of the champions and runners-up of some of the nation’s most prestigious national and regional tournaments by listing them below.

I think Traas would like to see that his debate tournament is on par with current TOC bid tournaments, considering it used to have one.
