Social critic and author Susan Sontag, a lifelong human rights activist and one of America’s foremost public intellectuals, died on today at the age age 71 after a battle with leukemia.
Sontag had a wide variety of interests that included “everything from ballet to photography to popularizing of the works of such authors such as Walter Benjamin and Elias Cannetti.” The winner of the National Book Award (among many other prestigious prizes), Sontag was the author seventeen books and countless influential articles and essays.

I totally missed that Jon had posted this. I would recommend - Regarding The Pain of Others (2003) as a great look into some interesting politics and the use of war imagery.

Bietz, is that the book about how photo images of suffering is bad because it takes away the emotion of pity it is supposed to portray?
