MN is hella pretty, if you will.
I don’t know how they made that photo that cool, but MN doesn’t normally like glow in the dark. But it’s pretty. oh yah fer sure.

I meant the new information for 2005 and the registration forms and whatnot, I think it’s on the UKY website? J.W. Patterson said they’d be up after December 1, but they’re not up yet.

Word on the street, or from my inside sources, has it that there are nearly 180 LDers registered for the tournament…
Breaking to doubles would mean that that will be one HELLUVA 4-2-and-not-clearing number… like 30!

Thank you for providing a weather link! Even though we just live a little south of MN, the weather this time of year tends to be quite different up there. That’s quite helpful!

with this many folks coming out, an octos bid next year might not be out of the question. any thoughts?

With 189 people at the tourney, I still doubt all 4-2s will clear… that is one HELL of a lot of people. Whoever organized that tournament is doing a kick-ass job, because I seriously doubt any tourney aside from maybe Harvard could get that many people to travel to their tourney.

The growth of Blake must be one the most rapid expansions of a tournament in the history of LD. Have any others ever grown this quickly?
I know I’m looking forward to it. And not just because of the possibility of karaoke with Bietz.

blake, unfortunately, is unlikely to receive an octos bid. i think the trend with the toc is to decrease the number of bids and thereby the amount of kids who attend the toc. adding eight bids to the event will not happen unless a current octos bid tournament loses its status.
which one of these octos bid tournaments should lose their status?
greenhill
st. mark’s
glenbrooks
emory
berkeley
harvard
when you think of it, none of these tournaments could *lose* their status. the question would then become: if blake gets eight more bids, which tournaments will share the loss of eight bids?

Blake is now at 200 LDers. The numbers just keep growing. It is incredible.
I agree that if these numbers continue for another year or so, they will have to get serious consideration for an octos bid. I know that JW has been at the tournament the last three years and is going to be there again this year.
Not sure about 8 bids that would be lost to shift to Blake. One thing is for certain. Hopkins will lose their bids. That’s only 2 bids. I don’t know about 6 more. Blake has been growing by leaps and bounds. It started as a finals bid about four years ago and has quickly moved to semis and now to quarters.
It is pretty easy to draw people. I mean the whole tournament is held in a wonderful hotel. You never have to go outside. It is a perfect site to have a big tournament. Anybody who has not been should go.

in terms of the number of students attending, none of those tournaments should lose their octos bid. if we evaluated in terms of competition, harvard might be the only one worth reducing (no hard feelings to those in the NE). a better strat might be to pick off bids from quarters, semis, or finals bids that are harder to justify. i am not sure which tournaments to start at, but i know that some people express lack of enthusiam for alta, auburn, asu, whitman, homewood, fed way and others. whoever had to made that decision would have a tough time either way. just my two cents.

I can’t imagine a tournament of that size not breaking to triples. It is possible though.

Whatever misgivings there are about the judging pool (I think the misgivings are centered on that, rather than the pool of competitors), Harvard’s enormous size - 350 debaters in varsity - makes it unlikely and unrealistic that it would be reduced to a quarters bid.
Posted from: 149.169.80.63
December 14th, 2004 15:17
i would probably agree. my guess is that if they bumped that to a quarters bid, they would take the bids from other small tournaments.

I’m scared! I’m from a small school and going to this tournment. Am i just going to be picked off by all the traveling teams or does Minnesota debate prepare you pretty well for the national scope.

the assignment of toc bids has more to do with geography and the composition of the toc advisory board than anything else. quite simply, just because people in different parts of the country don’t like tournaments in (say) the northeast or northwest, it does not mean a tournament deserves to lose a bid.
there are debaters in these parts of the country. the way that tournaments retain their vibrance is by having toc bids since that is the way that people make their traveling decisions.
it is very doubtful that blake will get an octos bid next year. if ever, it will have to sustain these kinds of numbers for several years (think 3-5 not 1-2). in that case, the toc will be forced to give it the octos bid consideration.
and for bvllekid… worry not. local minneapolis-st. paul debate is about as good as local debate gets. yes, there are some super star kids who are going to be at blake this year. but, remember… minnesota ain’t small potatoes! keep your chin up.
