Congratulations to all who bidded. (Sincerely)
But,
Apparently kids who have only done LD twice in their lifetime (alta being the second time) can bid at alta, it gets worse and worse every year, i hate this tournament and hope it loses its bid.

Ashan- I feel I need to make this comment, sorry.
You need to watch your mouth. You shouldn’t get pissy when things don’t go your way. I’m sure you didn’t feel that way after YOU got your bid at Alta two years ago, no? To denigrate a tournament to the degree that you say “it should lose its bid” is completely unnecessary. While it’s fine to criticize whatever you want to criticize, show some repsect to people who did well and are proud of their accomplishments at Alta. Alta is a topic of debate in this community- should it have a quarters bid is a question often asked- and I agree that perhaps it should be lowered. But don’t take out your petty frustrations on the successes of others.
Yours,
Max

I couldn’t find results for the 2000/2001 school year, but here are the Alta bids for the past several years. I think what you’ll find is that roughly half of the bid winners are never heard from again (but no harm, no foul), and that the other half includes some really outstanding debaters for whom Alta served as a springboard for further competitive success. Given the massive (and underserved by TOC opportunities) geographic region served by this tournament (AZ, CA, CO, ID, NV, OR, WA, WY, plus the occasional visitors from MN, MA, TX, etc.), it shouldn’t be surprising that some of these folks never get another bid. Focus instead on the great Western debaters who got their start at Alta, including Rob Gordon, Josh Anderson, Robert Chang, Jon Helfgott, Jessica Huynh, Matt Squeri, Mike Lee, Oscar Shine, Ashan Peiris, Max Stevens, Rusty Camden, Ranjeet Sidhu, Justin Hinojoza, and Hirsh Jain. I’d bet that some of this year’s Alta bid earners will step up and replicate their successes in national competition, and that the national circuit would be poorer without them.

Mad props to Jay and Duby for completing their quals, and to Kunal for winning and being one of hte nicest people in the activity. And for those of you who have problems with the bid level, thats cool, save it for later- you only look like a dick when you go to a tournament and then after not getting the level of success you wanted just go off on the tournament sucking.

first off, douglas county is in colorado, not nevada. but anyway, its obvious that this tournament isn’t highly regarded in the eyes of the national circuit crowd (whatever that is). and perhaps rightly so. after all, a novice received a bid this weekend. however, to claim that it lacks merit simply because half the bidders are never heard of again simply ignores the fact that alta is drawing from regions where people don’t travel as much. this doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy debaters- it means they don’t have an endless supply of money to travel across the country on a weekly basis. i got my first bid at alta (and whether i’m worthy of a toc bid is definitely, debateable, so top speak). i can say that it will be a fight for me to even attend another bid tournament. i think despite its problems, alta should keep its bid, if only to spur an interest in national circuit debating in debaters that otherwise wouldn’t pursue the circuit. as of now, the circuit is far from being geographically balanced. though it isn’t too bad, the mountain region is definitely lacking, and this is exactly where alta draws its debaters from. people who complain about the illegitimacy of local debaters ought to also keep in mind that we come to these tournaments vastly underexposed to argumentation the rest of you hear and get practice debating every weekend. the next time one, or more of us manages to hold our own it would be nice to recieve support and not bitter, scathing criticisms of our successes. i enjoy the circuit for the high level of debate and education it provides, but not, currently, for the exlusionary attitudes that come with it.

I have never been to Alta, and I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to weigh in on the issue of the tournament’s judging pool.
I think it is very, very important to have a national circuit opportunity in the Mountain Region. I come from an area that has six bid opportunities within a two hour driving distance. I know that most areas of this country are not quite so lucky. Kendra’s comment about the financial limitations of most schools in this country are well-taken and, frankly, true. Alta - and now, ASU - serve an underserved area.
Congratulations to Kendra, Kunal, John, Jessica, Sam, and the rest of the bid recipients on a job well done.
