Are you a neo-con?

posted by Bietz on June 30th, 2004

Apple Valley extemp coach, Gary Arndt, posted this link over on the hsdebate.com forums. It has some fairly in depth explanations of what those who are of certain IR ideologies, and how they might react to certain world affairs. Of course, all these quizzes should be taken with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, the Christian Science Monitor is one of the more intelligent papers out there…

A neo-conservative generally believes that American Empire is critical to world peace. For example, a neo-con may believe that if we democratize the Middle East, there will be less terrorism there. They are ideological which distinguishes them realists.

I am a…..Liberal. Very predictable quiz though. Every answer clearly had a clear-cut liberal, realist, neocon, and isolationist answer choice.

no, I know what a neoconservative thinks (sort of), but I don’t know what “neoconservative” means.

Well, “neoconservative” means “a person who believes that American Power is a paramount good”

    Re Pete’s post:

Is it that “american power” is a paramount good, or that soveriegn power (as a principle) is a paramount good?

wow, it’s not really that difficult a concept to understand. neoconservative=conservative. they prefix “neo” just makes it sound more radical. that’s how you can tell a liberal created the quiz :)

tim thats not true. lots of true conservatives dont like the “neocons”

i think “neoconservatives” refers to the somewhat branch off in ideologies when Republicans started becoming more influenced by the christian coalition type people. conservatives by definition prefer less government (or smaller govt) while neocons are ok w/ big govt to protect american interests.

although i really do think there need to be more clear labels for ideologies — classical liberals, liberals, conservatives, neocons, libertarians, ick all confusing

    Re: “Curious George”

I could be wrong, but I am unware of any European neocon. What distinguishes neocons from realists, is that neocons are driven by a specific ideology. A realist would advise any state to obtain power to protect their own self-interests. Neocons, in contrast, believe that America in particular, due to its values, should be teh hegemon. According to the neocon if American can project and instill its values across cultures, then the world will be safer.

    Re: Tim Sylvester

I think that “a” is correct. Not all conservatives are neocons. Some conservatives are isolationists. Some are realists. The Bush Administration are neocons.

dangit, pete, at least spell my name right! :)

cts, andrew thinks i’m wrong. i don’t think i’m wrong :) i would agree that there are different types of conservatives (economic, social, etc.). but there are different brands of liberals, too. still, any label stuck with the “neo” prefix sounds bad (i.e. neonazi [not to be confused with Neon Azi, the popular saudi rapper . . .]). that was my point - there is no “neoliberal.”

i scored in as a neoconservative, but i’m a conservative to the bone. either the quiz is wrong or neoconservative=conservative.
