Live from the NFL: The Awards
![]()
The awards ceremony is beginning, with words from Scott Wun and Billy Tate talking about the five eggrolls that Scott ate.
Click the link below, and hit “refresh” every few minutes. We don’t update every second, so please don’t tie up the site.
Thanks to Frank Langheinrich and the entire Utah crew who made the national tournament possible …
…. and to the various members of the tab staff…
standing ovation…
Special guest - the Mormon Church President Gordon Hinkley… under whose guidance, the church has grown by 35%… When he took over, there were 19 temples worldwide. Now there are 119 temples… Believe it or not, we are at the awards ceremony within the Mormon Tabernacle…
President Hinkley: “It’s hot in here.”
Applause…
President Hinkley: “I could have told you it would be. I’ve been here before…”
******
As we wait for results… we want to encourage people to come to the Victory Briefs Institute… we have over 220 in Session 1 so far and over 60 in the more intimate Session 2. If you procrastinated, and are still looking for a place to go, we’d love for you to join us. Just let chris@victorybriefs.com know…
Also - we have already announced that the Victory Briefs Tournament dates this year will be in January 8 and 9…. we put on this tournament for three main reasons, (1) to feed people like Babb and Bietz and O’Connell, who would otherwise starve in January; (2) to give Southern California debaters an opportunity to compete against the best from across the country; and (3) to provide a tournament for competitors from everywhere with an elite and experienced judging pool. The tournament is rapidly growing, and we’d love for you to join us…
****
Back to our regularly scheduled programming…
President Hinkley: “1611 King James Bible … And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain…”
President Hinkley: “Abraham Lincoln - With malice towards none, ….”
President Hinkley: “World War II resulted in the death of more than 60 million people…”
*******
I’m sitting here with Andy and Jon Cruz and Andrew Swan… hoping to do our best to give you up to the minute results… we apologize in advance if we have an outage… or if we misspell names… or if we don’t hear…. JON CRUZ WILL GET US BETTER CLEANER MORE CORRECT RESULTS ONCE THE OFFICIAL RESULTS ARE OUT AFTER AWARDS… This is our James Joyce’s stream of consciousness version of the ceremony…. By the way, this is the only church I know of with power outlets at the pews….
********
Lincoln Financial (a HUGE and AWESOME sponsor)… Vice President Susan Crabtree…
Billy Tate confirms that next year’s nationals are at Philadelphia… and they will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lincoln Financial…
Crabtree: “This has been an outstanding tournament at an outstanding location… I am awed at the talent that I see…”
applause for student competitors…
applause for coaches and parents…
Crabtree: “Lincoln Financial is a proud sponsor of the national tournament.”
Crabtree: “Lincoln Financial has been sponsoring for ten years… beginning with LD… in 1905, Robert Todd Lincoln [Lincoln’s son] gave the ok for the company to use the name and likeness… and the company has a responsibility to live up to that….”
Crabtree: “Next year, we are bringing you to our house… Lincoln Financial Field… this is the home of the Philadelphia Eagles football team… You can say that the NFL is coming to the NFL.”
[Cool video with cheesy music… Andy describes it as: industrial techno transitions to elevator soft rock to harmonica country as images of colonial re-enactment fades to modern city-scape… shots of national liberty museum, Philly symphony, to a man who is eating Philly Cheese steak]
Crabtree - YES, we will be at the football stadium…Next year, Lincoln Financial 100 years… NFL 75 years… There will be brand new facilities at Independence Hall with an exclusive preview of a new travelling exhibit for the NFL before the public….
Crabtree - letter from the CEO of Lincoln Financial to James Copeland…
****
…. the first drawing…
Mark Yoder of Lincoln Financial… wants to offer up an autographed jersey signed by Donovan McNabb… who is going to be the starting quarterback again…

I concur with Bubbs. I mean, no one likes to applaud at every single thing that’s ever said at a national awards ceremony. Why sit there in a suit in some strange church/temple when you could be at home browsing the net in your pajamas?

Cherian: If you want to talk about someone’s roots talk about Cyndy’s. She has better stories and a better color highlight/dye.

We can’t dump on someone like poor Cyndy. Not only is she already the worst judge on the national circuit, she’s also an invalid, has no friends, and is actually paying people to come see in IC. Let’s leave Cyndy out of this, you southern freak! :)

Cherian…at least Cyndy is still around the circuit. And yes, she has no firends, doesn’t return phone calls, is the worst judge, doesn’t flow and show be thrown off the face of the earth. And what is this about paying people to come to IC i’ll totally sign up to go on vaction to Woodhouse’s

Crawford, you have points…but like your debating, they really don’t matter so much.
Barry, you’re defense of your coach, while admirable is also quite misplaced. I appreciate my fingers and my vast list of enemies. As for my weight…are you calling me FAT?
What’s Kunta Kinte, again? I don’t remember…I’m getting old and senility is creeping up.
