Live from the NFL: 2004-2005 Resolutions

posted by Jon Cruz on June 17th, 2004

BREAKING NEWS: Here are the proposed resolutions for next season.

Apologies for earlier misspellings, the resolutions were read to another person over a scratchy, cross-continent phone connection due to a power outage at the school. We’re doing our best to get things to you in a timely manner, even under the circumstances! (Internet connection should be restored soon.)

1. Judicial activism is necessary to protect the rights of American citizens.

2. Democracy is best served by strict separation of church and state.

3. In the United States, jury nullification is justified.

4. The welfare of employees justifies government regulation of business in a free market economy.

5. When in conflict, public health ought to be prioritized over intellectual property rights.

6. To better protect civil liberties, community standards ought to take precedence over conflicting national standards.

7. In matters of U.S. immigration policy, restrictions on the rights of non-citizens are consistent with democratic ideals.

8. The pursuit of scientific knowledge ought to be constrained by concern for societal good.

9. Progressive taxation is just.

10. On balance, government censorship of sexually explicit material is justified.

yes- I’m liking most of these too…the judicial activism one seems repetitive of a resolution regarding strict construction two years ago though…..but, what are “intellectual property rights”???

i really like all of them except for 2 (can’t negate) and 5 (wayyy too specific, but definitely debateable). these resolutions are why i dont want to graduate next year.

though, to be fair, none of them seem amazing like some other topics have (globalization, mitigation, the environment, etc.)

2 is definitely negatable. I really like #4. I think it would make for some great debate.

    I dislike the majority of these topics…except for 1, 3, and 4… :\

#3 (Jury Nullification), There is a ton of literature directly on this topic (including some sections of the Federalist Papers). It is an excellent topic.

    I agree with Jon Gordon.

These topics rock. I haven’t considered how debatable they are, but they’re really interesting and relevant.

I hope jury nullification gets picked so more people get informed of their right to nullify.

    Good stuff.

5 is actually pretty sweet because no one knows much about it… I assume it has a lot to do with meds and whether or not companies have the rights to them (price, etc.). It’s different and sweeeeeet

you can’t negate 2, there is no conflict in 8,6 is stupid and 7 is problematically worded.

For #5, the conflict comes when big, greedy companies grasp on to their patents to prevent cheaper versions of the drugs to hit the markets. Sadly, this happens all the time.
I think my second-level favorites are 1 (it’s loaded wording will make for interesting positions on both sides), 4, and 9.

My absolute favorite is 10. Timely, interesting, with lots of possibilities for awesome case positions.

Two sources allowed me to be privy to a working list of the resolutions earlier in the tourney, and my favorite one sadly did not make the cut.

I think some case positions on number 2 and 7 will ultimately offend people, and I’m not crazy about the topics because I think it’s going to be hard for some to separate their own biases from the rounds.

More thoughts later; we may even put up a staff review of the resolutions, and I’ll extend my thoughts. Back to VBD reporting!

2 completely sucks. 6 is just plain stupid. the others I’m neutral on.

#2 is badly worded. The resolution uses the superlative term “best”. In other words, the negative could argue that if it can suggest ANYTHING that “serves democracy” better than church/state separation, neg wins. For example - neg could argue that while church/state separation is vital, “voting” serves democracy better. So the neg burden is relatively easy.

If they intended the resolution to be comparative - chruch/state separation vs. no church/state separation - they should’ve indicated as much!

Never having sat in on the deliberations of the committee, I don’t know how carefully they selected the particular wording of the resolution. But if #2 comes up, it’ll be interesting to see how it’s debated. . .

I also think it’s pretty unfortunate that the committee chose the word “church” when they could have used “religion”; that’s a pretty loaded and biased term, with roots in one particular religion. I’m not a fan of #2 at all.
