The Cat Nats Report: “I Am Not a Number, I Am a Free Man!”

BOSTON (May 29, 2004 11:52:26 EST) - Despite the early hour, rounds took off and people seemed surprisingly chipper. (Though, I think, a napping Joe Vaughan might not have been too crazy about being woken up several times during the rush to rounds.)
It will be difficult to report in with pairings, because the NCFL uses numbers, not schools and initials. (I’m judge 1571!) That said, when I have a method of getting them up, I will, so check back here. As a side note, I’ll give a prize to the first person who can correctly identify the source of the quotation in this piece’s headline. This is an easy one.
By the end of the first three rounds, I know I heard some of my favorite cards of the tournament. Two of them began like this: “Stephen Babb of Baylor University notes” and “Doug Lieb of Harvard University elucidates.” There’s another card out there, apparently, by this guy from Vassar College; that one might be favorite. (So, in summary: sorry, Sam, you’re not the only one whose overview got carded this year. And also, as much as I fancy myself an expert on just about everything, and I’m thrilled by all the positive feedback I’ve gotten here about the free NCFL handbook, and as much as I know it was an innocent and humorous mistake, don’t card overviews…please!)

the quote is from the old British show, “The Prisoner” and was said by Patrick McGoohan, who was number six….and I hope everyone is enjoying themselves at CFLs.

and, if you want to get really technical, its also from a simpson’s parady of the prisoner where homer gets taken to an island and claims he is not a number. of course, ten seconds later he says oh im number six.

The number system in anthem sets everyone to the traits in which the centralized power assigns them…his invention goes against this conformed system in which he lives in, so in essense isnt he establishing himself as an autonous invidiual rather than an adherant of the system to which he’s confined?

Hey, wow. I heard a card from that Stephen Babb guy too. Apparently he’s pretty famous. I pointed out in cross-ex that Babb was actually a *student*, not a professor, and was told that ‘well…everyone is entitled to their own opinion…I mean…hey…John Locke was once a student, right?’ I think you sort of missed my point…
