If I Picked the TOC At-Larges…
If JW got rid of the committee and let me pick who went to the Big Dance, here’s what I’d say
1. Neil Conrad- You can’t fault a guy for skipping some tournaments to play high school basketball especially when he is shooting 50% FROM 3 POINT RANGE. He won the Greenhill Round Robin and will be in at least quarters of TOC.
2. Jennifer Miller Colleyville- You aren’t going to find a nicer girl in all of debate. She has been doing consistently well all year, and finally had a breakout tournament at Vestavia. She deserves a shot at the national title.
3. Dan Zaleznik Lexington- Snow kept him out of Alabama but it shouldn’t keep him out of the TOC. He finished 2nd at the VBT RR and showed everyone that he can hang with and beat the best.
4. Fabien Thayamballi MSJ- You break at 8 TOC tournament and you should get to go to TOC it’s just that simple.
5. Aparna Talluri Colleyville- You go down to the Midwest in September and beat John Mcneil in a bid round. It doesn’t matter what you do the rest of the year. You’ve shown you can beat the best you should get to do it May also.

I wanted to echo the love to Dan and Fabien (and the entire list), and add a little love for Lilly Deng as well. In addition to Lilly, there are many other VERY deserving applicants — I’m looking at you, Teams Isidore Newman, Milton Academy, and Scarsdale — and wish the best of luck to all of you. You guys and gals deserve it.

certainly there are different schools of thought for who should get at-large entry. on one hand, a student has 5-10 chances to qualify to the toc and do not get in - yet they have really good records. on the other hand there are students who just don’t get the same opportunity to get to go to many qualifiers, either do to financial hardship or lack of available bids in their region. i think the discussion about who ‘deserves’ at-large entry has been very heavily weighted on the former. we also ought to remember that the toc can also be used as a great outreach tool to spread out some of the bids in order to give more students more chances to fully-qualify.

I encouraged Jon Gordon to go for the At-Large. I’ve seen a lot of the circuit this year. I haven’t found a better sophomore. It was a shame that he didn’t win the bid round at Vestavia. He could do fairly well at TOC

I’m clearly a bit biased, but Mr. Conrad is as fine a debater as you will see and without any question belongs at the TOC. He’s a lot of fun to watch and if anyone in this activity still cares about education, Neil should be at the TOC and enhance some of the dialogues there. Oh yah, and a true gentleman by the way…

I totally agree with Bietz. At my own tourney, I tried to make financial aid available to those who needed it; I would have listed some who fit into that category for at-larges, but the people I had in mind were able to qualify at the end. I would hope that, if a debater indicates such a situation, the at-large committee would take it into account.

I’ve been a big fan of Mr. Conrad ever since I had the pleasure of participating in the Massey/Vivero lab with him (found exclusively @ vbi). He’s an extremely great guy - who recently won the Honors title for Texas High School basketball - and as BABB pointed out he can stimulate you with his 1nc alone.
AND he wears a bowtie, game over.

Stuart Campbell and Derek Green from Highland Park and Lakeville respectively are great debaters as well. Best of luck to both of them in their quest for At-large bids.

Has anyone heard of Roger Legrand? I think he’s pretty good for a sophomore.
